Zika virus exposure

Just found out I am pregnant with my third child. Very very shocked and still coming to terms with it really.

One small concern before I start processing and accepting that I am pregnant is that I was in the Caribbean last month and it is advised not to get pregnant for 3 months. Both myself and partner were there and bitten quite a lot by mosquitoes.

Anyone else in this situation and can help?

I’m pretty clueless as this wasn’t planned so not something I know that much about. Sad

Congratulations!

I would be very calm about this, there hasn't been very much Zika activity in that area recently. Where exactly were you?

Worrywart21 · 07/08/2019 13:44

Thank you.

I was in the Dominican Republic.

OK, Dominican Republic reported it's last Zika case in 2017. There's ongoing surveillance in the area so the risk of transmission is considered to be negligible.

I know you'll still worry, but you really don't need to.

I was in Dominican in January and got pregnant a week after I got back! Not had my baby yet but had extra scans for something else and they've been keeping a close eye on the size of his head which is absolutely fine. A sign of Zika in babies is small heads.

No-one was really too worried about it & has barely been mentioned throughout my pregnancy.

Thanks, I wonder if I could get tested for Zika to see if it is in my system?

I am the same, went to Thailand and had no idea about the Zika risk. I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks after we got back.

I will mention it the midwife but like others have said I think the risk of Zika is very minimal.

I had a blood test done and it gave me peace of mind :)

Worrywart21 · 07/08/2019 15:19

Thanks beardofzeus, did you pay privately or did your GP offer it?
Did you test your partner too?

Don't waste your money - there's no fully validated tests for symptomless people. There's been no Zika in the region you went to for two years. You're fine.
