Anaethetist appointment

Hi all, FTM due October. Was wondering if anyone has ever had an appointment with an anaesthetist prior to delivery? I have a high BMI and have been given an appointment for September, just wondering what I should expect? Thanks in advance

I had a couple of appointments with the head anaesthetist in my last pregnancy and am expecting the same for this one. They weren't particularly memorable to be completely honest but extremely useful to know that I was quite high on their radar (I suffer from anaphylaxis with most anaesthetics and there is a worry that the "untested" on me ones may cause a reaction of some sort).

So it was a completely different reason for your appointment but was reassuring all the same. I took DH with me as I tend to not take in all of the information at the time and it's good to have someone explain afterwards.

I've got the same appointment coming up so following with interest...

I got an appointment for an anaesthetist - i am going on 27th August.

I am high risk due to BMI over 30 and my Mum had a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) when she had me.

Also watching with interest as I wondered what will happen at the appointment.

It's routine for many women, and BMI over 30 is one of the reasons women are referred for this.

They will ask to look in your mouth to assess how easy it would be to incubate you if a general anaesthetic were needed (unlikely). They will also look at your spine to assess siting a spinal or epidural if you needed to/opted to have one at some point in your labour.

The information from this consultation would then form part of your hospital held maternity notes or sometimes it will be attached to your hand held notes.

HTH.
