Antenatal cleft lip diagnosis

Hope I have posted this in the right place. I had my 20 week scan on Monday and got the shock of finding out my baby has a cleft lip. I have to have another scan on Tuesday to check for any heart abnormalities that may indicate a chromosomal problem but all was looking ok on the 20wk scan in that regard so keeping fingers crossed. If all is looking ok they are saying that an amnio is probably not indicated.
Has anyone been in this position? Struggling to come to terms with it and feeling in limbo until the next scan.

Hi, that must have been a shock.
I haven't had that experience, but it was always a concern with my pregnancies, as my Mum and two of her brothers have cleft lips.
Is it just the lip or potentially the palette too?

Thanks for replying. We don't know, they say it's very hard to diagnose the palate antenatally and will need to wait until baby arrives to find out. This is stressing me out as I like to plan everything and I want to know how I will be able to feed. If it's a palate as well it's unlikely I will be able to breastfeed but it's possible with just the lip. It's just on the one side.

I've not had experience but this was an area of special interest for a former boss, it's amazing what they can do now. There have been threads on this before so someone will be along who's been through this. Take care.

This happened to me at my 32 wk scan M0jit0 - near 28 years ago. I now have a 27 year old DS who is the light of everyone's life - bright, full of character and fun, intelligent and never without a group of friends around him.

Message me if you would like to chat - I remember the darkness of those early days after the scan. Flowers

Thanks all. Just feel like I can't get excited about baby's arrival and the rest of my pregnancy due to all this uncertainty.

It will take a few weeks to get your head around this. Once you've had your next scan, you'll have a better idea of what exactly you'll be facing.

All went well at scan this morning so it's just looking like the cleft we are having to deal with. So relieved.
