Bump on 95th percentile? Concerned,

I got checked out at the hospital today and they measured my bump. Over the last 3 weeks since I was last measured it’s increased massively, it was on track measuring 27 inches at 27 weeks, and now I’m measuring 33 inches at 30 weeks. They were really vague about why this might be and have referred me for a growth scan next week.
I had a glucose tolerance test at 26/27 weeks and my levels were all fine. Could I have developed gestational diabetes since then? What else could it be?

Might just be a big baby or alot of water !

Kerjohn · 31/07/2019 20:30

Don't worry too much! I had the same problem, tested for diabetes, told I was going to have s huuuge baby, talk of getting started early.
But in the end I had no diabetes, went 5 dats early and DS was only 8 pound 2 not what they were expecting at all! Try not to worry x

Flippertybob · 31/07/2019 20:35

I had a similar experience to Kerjohn.

My bump was consistently 4 weeks bigger than it should have been. No gestational diabetes.

The growth scan showed that the baby was going to be huge. 95th+ centile for head and abdomen.

She arrived 2 days early weighing just 7lbs 3oz.

It's really inaccurate. My bump was almost off the charts at one point and I had three growth scans. She arrived on her due date at 7lb 10 - bang on 50th percentile pretty much. Bump measurements are crap, and even can depend on who is measuring as it's a really inexact science trying to find the top of pubic bone and different people can measure differently.

Mine has been off the chart at 25, 28 and 31 weeks. Midwife not concerned by it. Have a scan next Friday anyway to check the position of my placenta and apparently they'll measure her then too but everything I've read seems to be reasonably reassuring! Also different midwives measure very differently, my normal midwife measures me way above the line each time but I was in hospital the other week and her measurement had me bang on 50th percentile.

Thank you all, this is reassuring! I’ve always thought the bump measuring seems bizarrely inaccurate, weird that it’s the usual method. Interesting that the growth scans themselves can also be so inaccurate though!
With every single person I see telling me how huge I am I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised I’m measuring big 🙄

My bump has always measured big (until recently - now 37 weeks) and above the 95th percentile. Baby is pretty averagely sized though and I just have a lot of amniotic fluid. No GD either, more than likely it's just one of those things and nothing to worry about. I've had three growth scans now and it's been nice to see baby!

PrayingandHoping · 31/07/2019 22:39

It's really inaccurate. My bump measures the 90th percentile but I'm under Fetal Medicine as baby is actually v small!

MrsP2015 · 31/07/2019 23:03

Measurements of bump made dd 9lbs at birth- she was just over 7lbs. I was also a little concerned about measurements but mw explained how the water can make a difference and so long as there's a steady growth that's great.
I'd expect it's their rules that you have a scan with the criteria of your measurements as they sign their name to say they've measured so if they didn't follow protocol their job is questioned.
I have friends who spent the first 12 months of their baby's life worrying baby is on too high centile or baby is late crawling- please try not to compare to others and I'm sure this scan will show your baby is perfect!
Keep us updated.

Bump measured 44 weeks at 38 weeks. Was induced at 40 weeks as they thought baby would be 11lbs.

He was 8.12

I wouldn't worry Grin

Em39ma · 01/08/2019 05:54

My bump is measuring 37 at 28 weeks. You can actually see her through my bump.
Had a growth scan last week and they say she is on about the 60 th percentile and is 2lb9oz at the moment. So predicted weight at birth around 9lb. The bump measure can differ between people doing it. I wouldn’t worry about it. I think some of us are just better at growing our bumps😉

MrFlibblesEyes · 01/08/2019 07:19

I've had the opposite. My first measurement was below the 10th centile so I was referred for a growth scan which showed the baby was above the 90th centile! I'm assuming there is a happy medium and that he is actually just a lovely normal size...
