20 week scan question

I am due to have my 20 week scan tomorrow and know that for the first few minutes they check everything is ok with the baby, once they have checked that they will let you see the baby etc.

I want to know what I am having (I know they can tell me in the hospital I am due to go to) so do I have to ask or will they ask us if we want to know? I don't want to assume they will mention it and then miss out on finding out what we are having.

They asked us at the beginning if we wanted to know - but then forgot to tell us to we had to ask.

I'd just make it clear at the beginning that you want to know if they are able to tell.

They asked us before they started scanning and showed / told us part way through the scan. If they don’t ask at the beginning I would ask them.

Same as PP, it was the first question our sonographer asked!

Also we saw the whole scan whilst he was doing all his checks.

DeadDoorpost · 30/07/2019 10:28

We got asked once the main checks had been done, but by that point with this one I already could tell I was having a girl as I'd seen DS scan so knew the difference

Just bear in mind that depending on the hospital’s policy, if baby is not in a good position they won’t spend huge amounts of time on trying to get baby to move so they can see the sex, especially if it’s a busy day. I already knew with our baby as we’d had a private scan a couple of weeks before to find out, but I was interested to have it confirmed at my 20 week scan if they were able. But baby was barely in a decent position for the sonographer to do the checks they’re actually supposed to be doing, let alone anything extra. The sex check is a nice extra, if you want to know, rather than what the scan is all about. Hopefully they’ll be able to tell you though. Good luck Smile

We were facing a tv type screen so got to watch whilst they checked her over, we'd already had a private scan but asked if she could confirm that 'she' hadn't grown any boy bits ha

Rememberallball · 30/07/2019 10:40

We were asked and, after quietly checking various things without any explanation of what they were checking, they went through the scan starting with the ‘required’ elements of the scan (brain, heart, stomach, kidneys, femur length etc) and then focused on the genital area and went through it with us

ForeverBubblegum · 30/07/2019 10:52

They tend to ask at the beginning so that if you don't want to find out they can make sure not to have any bits on screen. They will also probably ask if you have any questions towards the end so if they haven't told you by then you can ask.

@KatieMurr how did it go? All ok I hope?

KatieMurr · 01/08/2019 10:36

Yes all ok thanks, I got very emotional as she did all the tests in silence so when she told us everything was ok and I saw the feet int he scan I burst into tears. I cried even more when the sonographer confirmed we were expecting a healthy little girl.

It was amazing :) thanks for checking in

Congratulations! I loved finding out we were having a boy. I wouldn't mind either way but made it more real for me knowing and helped me start to bond. enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Wonderful! I’m also expecting a girl in October. Congratulations. Thanks for updating Smile
