Just wondering if anyone has managed to talk their consultant into inducing them early / on your due date?

I had diabetes with DD and she was 'borderline' large baby! I gave birth to her naturally but had a bad PPH afterwards and stitches.

My consultant said if I have GD this time she will be inducing me at 38 weeks (last time I had the option) and giving me growth scans regardless! This time I do not have diabetes!

Im now panicking she won't put me for induction! Iv had a scan today (28 weeks) and baby is 2Lb 10 I am panicking about going into labour naturally with a big baby, I live an hour away from the hospital and my biggest fear is a c-section!

Even though I had a VERY traumatic labour/birth last time I coped well with it mentally as I had amazing doctors and knew I was in a safe place!

I know if I wanted a C-section I could get one what are the chances of being induced?

Also they told me DD was 6LB 2 from growth scan and not even a week later she was born 8LB 9 so this is also making me panic about baby's size!

Sorry I'm not help but I'm hoping they induce me early not because of gd but I have such bad spd the pain makes me sick an such strong head aches so I'm hoping they let me go early to x

Soonsoonsoon · 01/08/2019 20:07

I cant help on the question of induction, but I don't think a big baby automatically means a difficult birth. My first was 8lb10 and was definitely the most difficult birth, needing a while host of intervention.

Subsequent babies were between 9 and a half and 10 and a half pounds with really easy labours, with only very minor tearing. So don't panic!

Lunafortheloveogod · 01/08/2019 20:14

I’m not sure about inductions before term either, unless you develop complications where obviously they’re better out than in. But I’d say it’s unlikely.. how many women would be in because they didn’t want a big baby.

Growth “guesses” are notoriously wonky ds was apparently 8lbs.. born at 6lb1oz where they left the rest of his weight who knows. Everyone told me I’d be having a big baby, they run in my family, I was huge and solid.. you’d have sworn you could feel him from the top of my bump down n he was a smurf and I was full of water Grin

Em39ma · 01/08/2019 21:00

If baby is measuring 2lb10oz now, baby will be around 8,10 and 9,2 ish
So not that big.
My little girl was measuring 2lb9oz at 27 weeks. I’m 29 weeks now and is still around that mark.
If they said they will induce I think they probably will still do so.
I’m being induced around 38 weeks but that’s because I’m old (40).
You must have another appointment soonish just talk to them about your concerns because you don’t live close by etc and the size.

HJWT2 · 02/08/2019 09:04

@Em39ma I see my consultant at 36 weeks and she said she will decide then 😬 hopefully I wont end up with a 10 LB baby or ill need bigger clothes haha x

You can ask to be induced. I have asked to be induced for various reasons at 39 weeks. There's no evidence of harm to baby at that stage and some evidence that it reduces need for emcs at 39 weeks. My consultant was very accommodating. Midwife is dubious and has to actually book it so keep having to remind her that 'choice' in maternity care is not limited to choosing 'natural' birth.

Em39ma · 02/08/2019 09:19

I know that feeling. Unless it’s a dress not much else fits me. Not sure how I will get through until October.
And top it off this morning, I have woken up covered in stretch marks, had none yesterday, but lots today.

Star801 · 02/08/2019 09:52

No advice on the induction but my first was 3lb 3oz at 28 weeks then 8lbs 11oz at birth (40+11) so try not to worry about the size (easier said than done) Flowers

someonesmother · 02/08/2019 15:23

An you speak to a midwife as well as your consultant? Just to get opinions. I find that midwifes often have a different take on things since they're always the ones who go through the birth process, and some of them have been doing it for decades! I'm starting to worry about my baby being too big and my midwife is much more helpful and sympathetic about it than my doctor!

Knickersononeshead · 02/08/2019 15:26

Speak to your consultant about your concerns but having a bigger baby once doesn't mean your next one will be big too. Dc2 was 9lbs11, dc3 was 6lbs12.

HJWT2 · 02/08/2019 16:01

@someonesmother I have a scan on tue & midwife on Wednesday so will speak to her then!

Thanks everyone! As long as baby is here safe and I don't have another bad PPH I am not bothered when he comes! But obviously cant predict either of those thing unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Em39ma Can I ask how you worked that out? I had a growth scan at 29 weeks and baby was estimated at 3lb 2oz but I have no idea how to use that to estimate how big she might be at term?

HJWT2 · 02/08/2019 21:29

@Twinkletoes2719 baby's are meant to put in half a pound a week after 30 weeks x

Are you sure you really want to be induced? I found it very hard to cope with, not only can it be a lot of waiting around for a bed in the labour ward (four days in hospital before I got one), I found the contractions got extremely intense very quickly. The baby didn’t react well either and I nearly needed an emergency c-section when his heart rate kept dropping. Some people find it fine of course.

christinarossetti19 · 02/08/2019 22:21

You've still got a while to go, so keep talking to your consultant and midwife about your concerns.

If they're doing regular growth scans, you can bring it up then.

I asked to be induced at 39 weeks with dc2 and dc3 (different reasons to you). Midwives and registrars were very 'oh, we like to let things happen naturally', but consultant was absolutely fine about booking inductions, especially since I'd already given birth vaginally.

Em39ma · 02/08/2019 22:45

@Twinkletoes2719
I looked it up online, it said that over the last 12 weeks, the baby puts on on average a 1lb a fortnight. It takes in account that the last 4 weeks is about a 1 lb a week and the average over whole 12 weeks is basically 6lbs.
Obviously everyone is different, but gives us all a rough estimation.
I hope that helps

WhatTiggersDoBest · 03/08/2019 01:28

I have been booked for an early induction for a big baby (I get called with the time tomorrow, to go in on Sunday). I would prefer to labour naturally but the baby's huge and the doctor seems to think it needs to happen so I'm going along with it all. It probably depends on your hospital/consultant though, so it's worth asking and letting them know your reasons.

HJWT2 · 04/08/2019 08:46

@Hugsandpastries I was induced with my daughter at 38 weeks, her heart rate did drop once but she was fine, pessary was put in at 10AM she was born at 4AM next morning.

@WhatTiggersDoBest Yeah I am going to speak to midwife on Wednesday after growth scan! I don't mind going into labour naturally but if it ends in a C-Section due to his size I will be putting in a serious complaint as its my worst fear! I had a traumatic birth with DD but that would tip me over the edge....
Not to mention the effect it will have on my life for the 6 weeks!

Just want baby here safe without being cut open 😁

I was induced early with my 3rd. Normal pregnancy and no concerns, however I said I needed to arrange childcare for my other two. One of my other children has SEN so arranging last minute care would have been difficult.

Also having some of my health conditions meant it was easier for the consultants to have certain things in place on a fixed date.

devilishlygood · 04/08/2019 11:20

A serious complaint??? For trying to save the lives of you and your baby??? That’s strong! And a bit misguided, sorry.

I can completely sympathise with your fears since having a bit of a rough time with your first delivery. Of course it will be effecting the way you prepare for this birth experience, but perhaps you could redirect some energy on preparing for a more positive outcome rather than assuming the worst. Speak to your midwife and even possibly the GP about help with pre-term anxiety.

8-9lb is not really considered to be overly large, so I do think that you would be better off not panicking about how the labour might proceed and start preparing yourself emotionally for a more conventional birth. Check out the stats for how regular PPH actually is, and start understanding that this was not the norm, you just had it unlucky.

Have you considered hypnobirthing, which gives you information about the science of birth? Even if you think you know all there is to know (I’m a nurse, so I admit that I was pretty confident), hypnobirthing techniques are another tool that may just help you to focus slightly differently.

melissa1215 · 04/08/2019 12:07

How do you get told how much the baby weighs? My midwife just does a growth chart, I'm 31 weeks and at 28 weeks she said baby was "the bigger side of normal" I asked how much he weighed and she said "I don't know, have to wait and see.."

I already look full term, would love an estimate of what my little one weighs!!

Also fearing having a big baby

Star801 · 04/08/2019 12:29

@melissa1215 I had a private scan at 28 weeks with my first and found out.

melissa1215 · 04/08/2019 13:32

@Star801 thanks! I'm booked in for a private scan at 34 weeks so will ask them 🙂
