Just wondering if anyone has managed to talk their consultant into inducing them early / on your due date?

I had diabetes with DD and she was 'borderline' large baby! I gave birth to her naturally but had a bad PPH afterwards and stitches.

My consultant said if I have GD this time she will be inducing me at 38 weeks (last time I had the option) and giving me growth scans regardless! This time I do not have diabetes!

Im now panicking she won't put me for induction! Iv had a scan today (28 weeks) and baby is 2Lb 10 I am panicking about going into labour naturally with a big baby, I live an hour away from the hospital and my biggest fear is a c-section!

Even though I had a VERY traumatic labour/birth last time I coped well with it mentally as I had amazing doctors and knew I was in a safe place!

I know if I wanted a C-section I could get one what are the chances of being induced?

Also they told me DD was 6LB 2 from growth scan and not even a week later she was born 8LB 9 so this is also making me panic about baby's size!

@devilishlygood if I end up having to go to over 41 weeks and end up in a C-section due to his size then yes, I will put a complaint in when iv requested to be induced early due to size.

All of the baby's in DH & I's families are big, none have been under 8LB up to 10 LB 5. Also PPH are a regular occurrence in my family, my DSis had a blood transfusion and was in for a week due to it! I understand fully I could go in and have the best labour I could imagine in my head or the worst!

Hypnobirthing didn't work with DD because I was forced to stay on my side for 4 hours in active labour and my midwife constantly disappeared, but thanks for the suggestion☺️

The problem here though, I think, is what you consider to be a ‘big’ baby and how that compares to Obstetrics Consultant.

In the NHS, macrosomia is over 10lbs, and you think 8lbs would be too big. That’s a big weight difference. If you have a Big Baby, you may be inducted at due date. But you won’t know that until a couple of weeks out. I think a good consultant would avoid inducing anyone over natural delivery because of the distress it causes baby.

If you were asking for an ELCS then you’d have a more consistent chance I suspect.

You definitely need to work on your anxiety though, it will help. You sound kinda snappy at people trying to give you a bit of a hand and that stress can’t be good for either of you. Why did you get pregnant again I’d you're so terrified and uncompromising??

I wish the evidence behind whether or not induction increases the risk of a section or not was clearer.

I know there was a recent study which said that induction lowers the risk but prior to that there were studies saying the opposite.

@devilishlygood sorry when did I say I was terrified? Or scared to have an 8Lb baby? Are you on the same thread?

My DD was 8LB 9 at 38 weeks, so If she was born at 42 weeks she could have been 10 LB 9. That is what I am worried about, also the fact they have told me she was on the line for being a big baby but came early.

Im not scared to give birth but I am scared of the baby getting stuck and ending up having a c-section!

HJWT2 · 05/08/2019 13:33

@VivaLeBeaver I personally think its all to do with whether the mothers body is ready or not, if your cervix doesn't want to open then it wont open! I didn't have an epidural to hopefully lower my risk of a section as I knew induction was already making the risk bigger!

If it was up to my midwife she would of shipped me of for a c-section but luckily the consultant came and said baby was fine and she was delivered naturally a few hours later!

@devilishlygood can you screen shot it and post the pic please because I cant find that in any of my post's on this thread, I said I was panicking about going in to labour naturally with a big baby.

Now we’re being a little childish. See someone for your anxiety love. It’s detrimental to the development of your baby.

sweetkitty · 05/08/2019 17:15

My 9lbs 3ozs baby was a lot easier than my 6lbs 3ozs baby, big baby doesn’t always mean difficult labour.

codenameduchess · 05/08/2019 17:34

Baby 'getting stuck' could happen at any size and any gestation though, it isn't just 'big babies' and an induction won't change that. Same with PPH, if it's going to happen it will happen. I've been told that the heavier babies are easier births from a lot of women, most didn't have more than a few stitches.

I think you need to address your anxiety over birth rather than demanding inductions and threatening complaints. You'll get a much better outcome if you redirect or address some of the rage and bitterness you have from your first birth as it's still affecting you.

@devilishlygood I am being deadly serious, not childish! You quote me saying I am terrified and iv asked you to show me were I have said that.

@codenameduchess Please read my op again, I am not scared of giving birth

Even though I had a VERY traumatic labour/birth last time I coped well with it mentally as I had amazing doctors and knew I was in a safe place

Hence why I would prefer to be induced, it took me 2 hours to get to the hospital yesterday!

I don't know how a thread from me worrying about my baby being large and going into labour naturally on my own has now become people telling me to get my anxiety under control when it comes to giving birth Hmm

The problem is, HJWT" is that people can only contribute their own experiences/biases/views on these threads.

Your pregnancy and birth is about you, your life circumstances and your baby.

Keep talking to your consultant and midwives and agree a plan. IMVHE, consultants are often happy to book inductions from 37/38 weeks onwards for a variety of reasons. Having birthed vaginally before will increase your chances of it being straightforward as well.

Abstractedobstructed · 06/08/2019 11:39

I got an early induction at 37 weeks. All I had to do was get severe cholestasis of pregnancy and not respond to the medication attempting to reduce my bile salts.

Seriously though, those measures are very rough and ready. The day before DD was evicted they scanned me to make sure she was grown enough. They estimated her size at 5:12 to 6lb. The next day at her birth she was 7lb 6oz. Try not to worry. If you don't have GD this time the baby is unlikely to be as large as your GD baby.

I well remember the anxiety of impending birth and I hope that you get a safe delivery and healthy baby.

Buyitinbamboo · 06/08/2019 11:57

Hey OP. My DD was born a week early at 10lb 6. So firstly I'd like to reassure you big baby doesn't mean bad labour, I had a wonderful labour. Anyway on to your question.

I had the GTT test which was negative but DD was still big and I was having regular growth scans. The doctor said at 38 weeks they wouldn't be doing anything but to come back at 40 weeks if I was still pregnant and if she was measuring over 11lb they would consider a c-section. I went to my midwife (who happened to be a different trust) and basically cried about how much pain I was in, she called the hospital I was giving birth in and they agreed to offer me an induction for 4 days time and in the meantime she gave me a sweep. The sweep worked and DD was born the next day. I never had an actual consultant though, everytime I had a scan a different doctor (or they might have been consultants) would see me.

I'm pregnant again and I can well imagine I will have another big one but this time I am happy to let nature run it's course as I know my body can cope with it

Moncwf · 06/08/2019 12:14

OP it's perfectly reasonable to request induction at 39 weeks onward, as I've said, I've done it for various reasons. There's always a risk with intervention but if you understand risks I can't see why it would be an issue, I think there's a lot of unnecessary negativity around induction that isn't supported by evidence. Bad experiences happen and are difficult to predict, but having agency and choice is helpful to mitigate that.

HJWT2 · 06/08/2019 17:03

@Abstractedobstructed @Buyitinbamboo @Moncwf thanks for your helpful input !

I had a scan last week and 1 today, from there measurements baby has put on 11oz in a week so if he carry's on at this rate he will be 9LB 13 at 40 weeks! So will speak to midwife tomorrow as don't see my consultant till 36 weeks! X

Hi op I've requested and been told by my consultant that I can be induced at 40weeks if baby hasn't arrived by then....I'm currently 23wks pregnant with 4th baby, but in my second labour I went 12 days overdue and had to be induced i ended up having assisted forceps delivery due to (shoulder dystocia) baby weighed 10lb 3oz,in my 3rd pregnancy I had extra growth scans which I was told baby would be around 7lb and the consultant would be happy to let me go overdue.....I requested to be induced on due date and was booked in but baby was born 3 days early at 8lb 6oz.....so although I wouldn't ideally want to be induced because of the risks I feel it's far riskier for me to go over due date. good luck getting what you want and with pregnancy/Labour 😊
