No heartbeat 7 weeks

I am 7+1 going by my LMP. My cycle is usually around 26 days.
I had a scan today and the fetal Pole measured 6mm and he couldn’t see heartbeat.
I’m devastated.
He has asked me to come back in 5 days for a repeat scan.
Is there any chance this pregnancy is viable? 😢😢😢

It is possible, the dates are rarely 100% . You should have your answer in 5 days Flowers

I can't say for sure what's happening but 7 weeks is still very very early, it might just be that the heartbeat couldn't be seen yet. I won't say try to relax because I know when it come to things like this there's no such thing but I hope you get a positive result from the next scan Flowers

Pineapplefish · 27/07/2019 18:24

Yes, there is a chance that it will be okay - it's still early. Good luck OP.

kkl1 · 27/07/2019 19:53

There's still a chance good luck xx

Whisky2014 · 27/07/2019 19:54

Yes there's every chance op. It's sooo tiny could easily still be forming and also, maybe your dates are out slightly. I wouldn't worry yet xx

Thanks for your replies! I don’t want to give myself false hope, the sonographer seemed pretty sure it was a miscarriage but wanted to wait and confirm next week.
I just feel like by 7wks a heartbeat should be seen 😢

In this situation it's not hopeless as you could well have ovulated late and be less pregnant than you think.

Hi @JessicaJones35, wishing you strength during this difficult time. Do you know the measurements of your gestational sac?

JessicaJones35 · 28/07/2019 16:02

No I don’t know the measurements of sac. He showed me the pregnancy sac, the yolk sac and the fetal pole measuring 6mm.
I am breastfeeding so my periods aren’t exactly regular but we only dtd once so I’m pretty sure when I conceived!

Okay, I did quite a bit of research when I had my miscarriage but most of my stats are related to sac diameter rather than measurements of fetal pole.

Generally practitioners tend to be conservative about diagnosing miscarriages so I would say that his saying it likely is does make it more probable than not. However this article radiopaedia.org/articles/fetal-pole?lang=us suggests that heartbeats should be detectable by the time the CRL measurement is 7 mm or more which means you're not quite there yet. Don't forget that even if you know when you conceived implantation takes different amounts of time which can affect dates.

In short, in your situation I would prepare for the worst but do know that it's not impossible that things could be ok - I know that that's really hard to cope with. I found it easiest to assume the news would be bad as I felt it would be better to be pleasantly surprised if things worked out rather than to be shattered if it didn't.

If you get bad news please do make use of the miscarriage boards here, they are so supportive. I had a mc in March of this year and got pregnant two months later with a baby that is looking healthy at 15 weeks. Hoping things work out for you.

Sonographer here.
I'm sorry you're going through this.

If a fetal pole is over 7mm and there is no heartbeat, a miscarriage can be diagnosed straight away.

If, as in your case, the crown rump length (CRL) is less than 7mm then the first scan will act as a baseline. If at the second scan there is still no heartbeat and there has been no growth, ie CRL is still 6mm, then unfortunately a miscarriage can be diagnosed with 100% certainty. Your sonographer has done exactly the correct right thing, sitting on the fence and giving time for there to be any progression.

I'm really sorry but I feel that it's going to be bad news for you Thanks
