Hair loss during pregnancy??? Anyone's hair falling out?

I am currently 16w+3d and have had crazy hair loss the last few weeks. I have a lot of hair to begin with but the amount falling out with every brush or shower is alarming! Like huge handfuls! When I search for "hair loss and pregnancy" online I only find articles saying how your hair gets lovely and thick in pregnancy and falls out after birth. I had my ferritin levels checked and they were great (about 100). The only things that might contribute is that I did IVF (taking Pergoveris and Luveris meds) and then estrogen and progesterone supplementation for the first 12 weeks. Also my TSH value went up to 3.5 in the first weeks of pregnancy, so they put me on L-Thyroxin 25 which brought the TSH value down to about 1.25 pretty quickly and is staying there.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Any ideas why this is happening or if it will stop?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m only 5 weeks and I’m shedding awfully! I don’t know if the heat has anything to do with it?

It’s probably linked to the thyroxine. My hair fell out loads when I first start taking it (before pregnancy), then within a month it was growing back and thicker than ever.

Yes mine is falling too and think it’s due to the increased TSH and then subsequent increased thyroxine dose, I’ve had my dose tripled since being pregnant!

Ah ok, I didn't take any Thyroxine before the pregnancy. Just started 25 µg when my TSH went up to 3.5. I hope this stops soon, for you too!

Yes me - get your bloods done, ask them to look at your iron and specifically ferritin which is your stored iron. Anything below 40 for ferritin can cause hair loss, mine was 27 so started liquid iron and it’s now stabilised. Good luck x

I had them check my Ferritin because I also suspected that, but it was 100 so that is definitely not the problem. Glad yours is stabilised though!

Hi there. Sorry to start up an old thread but…..
I am also going through this. I’m currently 28 weeks and extremely worried about the amount of hair I’m losing every day. I also had Ivf. Just wondering if your hair loss slowed down as the pregnancy progressed and if it grew back after pregnancy? Also if it did grow back was it to the same thickness pre pregnancy and did the texture of your hair return to normal? Any help would be massively appreciated!!

Hi there, sort you’re going through that. I think it did slow down towards the end of the pregnancy although I did have some more hair loss a few months after birth. At that point I cut my hair short and loved the change and didn’t notice it falling out as much. It definitely grew back and was at thick as before (at the roots, will take longer for the ends to thicken out). But we have done several IVFs now for baby 2 and I am losing it all again 🤦🏻‍♀️ Im sure it will grow back though once all the hormone chaos of IVF, pregnancy etc is over!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, it’s great to get a bit of hope at this time. I wish you the best of luck with your second Ivf, it’s such a stressful time and the last thing you need is the added stress of hair loss. Sending Positive thoughts to you!

Thank you! All the best to you as well!
