I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Forgot to say @norbert23 thank you and I hope you and baby are well too! Smile

Bol87 · 06/09/2019 16:45

Fantastic to hear all the stories of post-HG. I remember only too well how amazing post-pregnancy felt last time health wise. I remember the post birth first meal was incredible (hospital food 😂) & for weeks, I kept thinking how non squashed my stomach felt!

Had my 12 week scan, surprisingly my due date remains the same, 18th March. I’m 12+2 today Smile All was well, baby was extremely active, took ages to get all the measurements!

Really lifted my mood seeing the bambino, it’ll all be worth it in the end!

sprite25 · 06/09/2019 17:18

Hi all hope everyone is having a relatively good day. Today has been quite bad, for some reason I had it in my head I was over the worst of it as I've been feeling fairly OK the last few days so only took two doses of my cyclizine.... Big mistake! I feel so sick and have thrown up til my throat is sore. Also keep getting headaches and seem to have such a dry mouth but if I drink too much it comes back out, I don't think I'm dehydrated but just finding it hard to get that balance of drinking enough to not be dry and thirsty but not so much that my stomach decides to get rid of it

LucindaE · 06/09/2019 17:51

justtheonethen I am so glad that the thread helped before. Defintely everyone says that seeing about a childcare plan is one of the best failsafes besides pre-emptive meds. As you know better than me, the more rest you get the better.
Reastie How lovely to hear from you saying that it was all worth it to have two. Great encouragement for everyone.
beforeihit30 Lovely to hear form you. Sorry to hear about piles and bruising. Do keep calling in.
norbert And you too! Thank you for your lovely words.
Bol87 Congratulations on scan.
Waves to all. Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Sprite So sorry to hear of violent sickness and headaches. Ice cubes can help a sore, swollen throat.

Hi all, sorry to hear of others suffering, I'm having another bad day, been bed bound all day, hardly kept anything down and ketones are at 3+ I'm so miserable, I've never had HG at this point in my previous pregnancies (24 weeks) and I don't get how I can be absolutely fine one day then sick as a dog the next. It means I can never plan anything as I never know how I'll be feeling.

So good to hear from the post birth HG survivors, I am dreaming of that day.

I don't say it enough but thank you to Lucinda for keeping this group going, it really has helped especially in my darkest days xx

Catconfusion · 07/09/2019 15:25

Thank you @DeadDoorpost but I gave it 4 days. I've actually felt a bit better off it so I'm going to see how I go over the next few days.

@LucindaE I think you're right, I'll go back to the doctor next week. When it's bad the vomiting is uncontrollable so I need a plan in place for if it gets that bad again because the cyclizine only delayed the inevitable. Ive had a reasonable couple of days but I know it won't last.

Thanks @Bol87 and I'm sorry its been so bad for you. I do get that impression that the nausea is a constant and doesn't go. I just hate the drowsy out of it feeling I got with cyclizine. I'd rather be vomiting a bit more but more alert. I got tingling in my hands and feet as well which wasn't nice. I will see the doctor next week because I'd rather have a plan in place for when/if it gets bad again. I have Ondansetron in the cupboard from my first pregnancy given to me when they found no heartbeat because I was projectile vomiting right up until the surgery to remove the pregnancy. I can't remember how good it was as I was a mess at the time. It might be I move onto it with the doctors say so.

So ladies I've been feeling really negative about my pregnancy since the sickness got bad. I guess because I was ill with my mmc and we still lost the baby so not reassuring. It's silly really because in my case the health of that pregnancy and the sickness were unrelated.

On a happier note I went for my scan today to see my baby has quadrupled in size over two weeks. The heart was pounding away and we even saw the arms twitching. It was awesome and made the last two weeks worth it. I'm now 8 weeks plus 5. I got so wound up this morning because I didn't vomit in the night so was convinced something had gone wrong. Of course it was fine and baby looked perfect. Now i'm just relieved to be having some rest bite today. xx

Catconfusion · 07/09/2019 15:28

@ClareDB I'm so sorry you've been bed bound. It must be so hard still feeling so ill at this point. I hope it dies down soon! x

@sprite25 I'm really sorry you've been so ill. It's just so exhausting for you and pregnancy is worrying enough. I do hope you feel better soon! x

snipples · 07/09/2019 15:31

Hello all - I've been lurking for a few weeks. I'm on my second HG pregnancy. Was really hoping I'd avoid it this time but once I hit 6 weeks it was like a switch had been flipped and the vomiting started again. I'm really not sure I can face this for another 7 months. Last time I had it right up til birth.

I'm taking zofran and ranitidine but still suffering.

Hope you're all managing ok. It really is awful.

Catconfusion · 07/09/2019 15:34

@snipples I'm so sorry you're going through this again. How old is your first DC? It must be hard having one to look after and being so ill. My thoughts are definitely with you as at least this is my first baby. xx

snipples · 07/09/2019 16:15

Oh thanks @Catconfusion but it's shitty enough for us all I'm sure. My DD is 15 months so will be just under a 2 year age gap. Luckily for me my DH has been really good and is doing the lions share of the work at the moment but I get the guilts that I'm not doing enough with her. I feel absolutely shattered as well. Really hoping it pisses off soon but bracing myself for the whole time again.

When are you due and do you know what you're having?

DeadDoorpost · 07/09/2019 16:15

@snipples... your username is familiar. Were you pregnant in 2017? If not then I've definitely seen you around on something... either way, sorry to see you're here

Catconfusion · 07/09/2019 16:41

@snipples it’s amazing he’s able to help so much. I’m 9 weeks and due 15th April. My husband is great too. We have three dogs so that’s tricky some days getting them walked. I can imagine with some partners it would be tricky. Yes I hope it goes away soon. It just sucks the enjoyment out of pregnancy. I had two mcs so it’s pretty anxious anyway. Xx

Makingawish · 07/09/2019 17:53

Hi everyone, my GP has diagnosed me with having HG as although I've not yet been physically sick, the nausea and exhaustion is out of control. I'm only 7+3 and have been off work for 2 weeks so far with at least another coming up. I haven't left the house in a week and can't even stand for long without feeling weak and tired 😖 I've got cyclizine which does take the edge off the nausea but that's it. Does anybody have any other tips other than ginger (🤢)? I've tried reading through the thread but there's so many posts 🙈

Sorry for the essay x

Catconfusion · 07/09/2019 18:25

I’m so sorry @Makingawish I’m in a similar boat although I’ve been vomiting on average a few times a day. One thing that might work on a milder day is sniffing lemon essential oil. I was skeptical but it’s helped me get to sleep on some nights. Also keeping crackers near the bed so your tummy doesn’t get empty. Other than that rest and eating what you fancy. I get great relief from foods I crave which is mainly bread and cheese. Fizzy sweets are also good. Cyclizine didn’t do much for me but if it’s taking the edge of its worth it. Rest as much as you can. I feel far worse if I try to do too much. Let us know how you’re getting on! Xx

LucindaE · 07/09/2019 22:14

Makingawish Welcome. Sorry you feel so bad. If Cylizine is not helpful then there other meds which might help. Do ask for others if it isn't helping. Things do get much better between weeks 14 and 20 for most people. Even for the unlucky ones who suffer throughout, it is never as bad as in the first dreadful bit. A good anti acid can make a big difference to the sickness. Those on Ondansetron will usually need a laxative. Some drinks and solids that have helped others: flat full sugar coke, ice lolllies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucoazade, fizzy orange, fizzy water, lemonade, Robinson's fruit drinks, Dr Pepper, orange squash, tonic water, Elderflower water, Elderflower coridal and tonic water (eallison's tipple), soda water, Iron Bru, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), orange juice (if not too acid) and 7Up. Also, someone recommended piles of ice in drinks. For foods of a sort, nibbles of chips and crisps, cheap ice cream, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, baked potato, Scoth pancakes, biscuits and cuppa soup.
Have you got kesostix to test for deyhydration, available from any chemists? They are not the best method compared to scanty dark urine, dry mouth, headache, etc, but A and E departments do take them seriously.
snippets Like Dead Door Post I remember your name. Sorry you are suffering again. As you are a veteran you don't need to read the above spiel. As you suffered badly last time, might they consider steroids this time?
ClareDB Thank you for lovely words. Sorry you are still suffering late on, though I am glad there are good days too.
Catconfusion I am so glad that the scan encouraged you. Good advice.
Waves to all and leaves, flapping and clucking.

Sorry to hear of more suffering .. I’m 12 weeks in and it’s a long, hard road. Food wise for me - really salty crackers (Tuc do the job), really salty crisps, jacket potato, spaghetti hoops, bread, peanut butter, cheese, fish fingers, tinned peaches, summer fruit squash/cordial, malted milk biscuits, Cheerios without milk, sometimes chips, couscous with scrambled egg (that’s more recent & on my better days only.. bit of weird one) & traffic light ice lolly’s. That’s about all I’ve eaten in two months. Tonight I managed a slice of plain pizza & I didn’t hate it! Progress..

For heartburn, if like me you take so many meds you want to avoid even more, I find Tums amazing! So much better and tastier than Gaviscon or Rennie! They are American I think but I got a big old tub on Amazon Prime next day!

Those at the start of it all, of you can bear to take Floradix iron liquid (10ml twice a day so very small), it can help keep those iron levels up & avoid anaemia while your diet falls to the floor. Iron tablets made me so sick, my doctor recommend Floradix as my anaemia is not too bad and over a week, my energy has lifted a bit! And no side effects!

Sending love, I feel your pain greatly!

Makingawish · 07/09/2019 22:37

@Catconfusion @LucindaE thank you both!! 💜 I'm managing to eat bits a day but it is very random and very much what I specifically fancy there and then so I have my poor DH run ragged 🙈 I'll have to get some of the dehydration test sticks, I wasn't aware of them. My GP tested it about a week ago and I was only slightly dehydrated but just to the point where she was like 'try and drink more' so I've made a conscious effort with that. I guess the only real solution is to ride it out 🤞

snipples · 08/09/2019 13:35

Yes that's me - pregnant from end of sept 2017 to May 2018.

Ugh it really sucks. I'd forgotten how shit it was. I'm seeing my new doc next week so hopefully she can sort me out with something to help. Current drugs not really doing it.

As well as ondanestron I've got metoclopramide but I hate taking that one as it makes me so drowsy and unable to function. I can't work on it. Will have to see what the doc says.

DeadDoorpost · 08/09/2019 14:31

Due date today, and absolutely no signs of her arriving at all. I do feel more sick than I have done recently though, as I've been off meds for May be 2 weeks now? Maybe less than that but I've lost track. Every twinge is driving me mad. I might go and have a bath to try and relax as much as I can but I doubt it'll help.

snipples · 08/09/2019 16:00

Oh how exciting that you're so close to having the baby @DeadDoorpost. I hope it all goes smoothly. Do you know what you're having? Sorry if you've said, I've not read the whole thing.

DeadDoorpost · 08/09/2019 16:39

@snipples im having a girl this time round. Just tried having a bath and shower but couldnt get the water to the temperature I wanted. I have a feeling I may be ill. Either that or the boiler isn't working properly bit something tells me that's not the problem.

LucindaE · 08/09/2019 20:05

snipples Ah, I definitely remembered the name. Best of luck for this time.
DeadDoorPost I hope you escape a virus of any sort. It is a lot colder today. Cheering you on.
Bol87 That is great advice, and about Floradix as a good substitute for iron pills. Waves to Makingawish and everyone.

I'm coming on this thread as I'm suffering with constant nausea and I'm exhausted with it. Someone directed me here as feeling a bit fed up with not eating properly. Not been sick but on the verge an awful lot. Just don't want to eat but forcing myself. I'm 15 weeks but its worse not better. I'm going to the gp next week when I have the energy. I honestly feel weak and just want to stay in bed. Nothing tastes right

putputput · 08/09/2019 20:41

Hello all,

Sorry, I've been off this thread for a few weeks as I was finding it all a bit much.

You might remember, I had the most horrendous first trimester- reliant on IV fluids every other day, steroids, long hospital stays. Came very close to termination.

I'm now 22 weeks, still very medicated but functional and back at work on reduced hours. I also am back to being Mum to our beautiful toddler.

Baby is a constant wriggler/jumper. It's measuring a little small which they're putting down to the hyperemesis. I'm having a lot of additional scans to monitor but they aren't overly concerned at the moment.

DH is now on the waiting list for a vasectomy. Part of me is devastated by this as it was always my dream to have a large family. However, it would not be fair to either of us, or our children to ever go through this again.

I really feel for all those of you currently in a dark place. This illness is completely all encompassing and impacts on every part of your life. I can really recommend the charity pregnancy sickness support if anyone needs advice or additional support.

@DeadDoorpost I'm keeping everything crossed this will all be over with for you very soon.
