Cyst on ovary (corpus luteal cyst?) - please help!

I had a scan yesterday, at 11+5, and all was well, but the sonographer noticed a small (2cm ish) cyst on my ovary. She said it will probably go away by itself, but it will need to be checked at 20wk scan.

Does any one have any info about these? I have googled, but would prefer real advice from real people! Specifically, if you had one, did it really just go away by itself? What happens if it doesn't just disappear?

Although I've no first hand experience I did read quite a few personal experiences on Yahoo answers when I had a cyst and was TTC.

They all said it's quite common and doesnt cause problems and just moves out of the way of the baby. Some said they had big cysts but no probs and when they had a c/section the cyst was removed at the same time.

Hope you get some "real" people who've actaully experienced this.

I'm in the same situation - 20 wk scan is next monday.
Sonagrapher said exactly same thing and that it was quite common, also said could cause some pain on left (as its on my left ovay) when it goes) I've had sharpe pain on my left side on and off but waiting to see what scan says - will let you know next week! This is second baby and didn't have this before so am hoping its corpus luteal cyst

will watch in case anyone has any more info!

I had a huge one at my reassurance scan at 7 weeks - it was still there at the 12 week scan, but had more or less gone by the 20 week scan.

The sonographer (at the 7 week scan) was completely unfazed by it - but did ask if she could take a picture of it to put in her log book!

Honestly, it's not a problem ...

I had one during one pregnancy that was picked up during the scan. It didn't cause any problems and went away by itself some time after delivery.

Just to add, I found this site very reassuring ...

oh, and I'm now 31 weeks, and it's not caused any problems

Hi pobletsmum, I had a large cyst on my ovary with my last pregnancy. If it is the corpus luteam cyst I believe (if I remember properly!) that this is actually the site on your ovary where the egg was released from. It also has something to do with maintaining the hormone levels in your body until the placenta takes over the job. It should gradually disappear after the 12 week mark. Mine was misbehaving as it kept bursting and releasing fluid which was painful. But sure, enough by 20 weeks it was gone.
I am not an expert though - just going on what I was told and what I have read. Hope this rerassures you.

Thanks redfraggle, it is reassuring to hear your experience. I'm glad your cyst disappeared by itself. Fortunately I haven't had any pain from mine yet.

I had a large luteal cyst during pregnancy. I was quite worried, but it was completely painless and did indeed go away by itself. HOpe this helps .

Thanks bagsundereyes. Hearing everyone's stories about large cysts that have disappeared is making me hopeful that my small one will do the same. As fraggle said, it's probably just helping to support my baby anyway until the placenta is ready to take over, so maybe it's not such a bad thing?

well i had 20 wk scan and cyst has more or less gone - still having some pain but hope thats just it going, hope yours goes too
