Weight loss in first trimester.

Hi folks,
I'm 9+1 and am worried about weight loss. Initially it was due to morning sickness as I was eating less. However for the past 2/3 days I have been eating around 1600 kcals but am still hungry and am still losing weight. I've read that this is a sign of impending miscarriage or that a missed miscarriage has already occured. Any advice? I'm pretty worried. Cheers!

Hi OP. Sorry to hear you're so worried. Lots of women do lose weight in the first trimester, especially if they've been sick. You're using up a lot of energy growing a baby, remember, so it's likely you need a bit more than 1,600 calories a day at the moment. You wouldn't actually be expecting to gain much weight though at this stage, either, and we've never heard of this as being a sign of miscarriage.

If you're worried, give your midwife team a ring or pop in and see your GP though. They should be able to set your mind at rest.

Hopefully someone else will be along soon who might be able to help.

1,600 is probably too low depending on your current weight/height. Do you calorie count normally?

I haven’t weighed myself this pregnancy apart from at the NHS recommended points, but I know that I lost quite a bit in the first trimester with severe sickness. Baby is very healthy and currently booting me in the side.

I lost a stone in my first trimester due to sickness.

All passed now and I have a lovely little bump at 16 weeks and have had lots of compliments to say how good I am looking. TBH before I was pregnant I could have done with losing a bit of weight anyway so it was probably a blessing in disguise.

I was told by my midwife not to worry as it is quite common in 1st trimester due to the sickness, and baby will be getting everything it needs its just me that will suffer!
