One cigarette

Hi all. I was at a really fun wedding last night with lots of old friends and in a moment of weakness I sneaked off and had one cigarette. It's the only one I have smoked since I found out I was pregnant and I feel absolutely horrendous about it now. I know it was stupid and I am not here for people to attack me about it. Do you think that I might have done something to harm my baby? I'm almost 16 weeks and have an appointment with the midwife on Tuesday so will speak to her about it then too. Thanks from a very ashamed mum to be. :-(

I am no expert but I pretty sure one cigarette would do absolutely no harm! Don't worry. Remember some people back in the day used to smoke all the way through their pregnancies. I felt the same about having a glass of wine!

Please do speak with your midwife. Don't struggle alone, there are services that exist to help you!

One cigarette won’t do any harm, but be very careful that it’s not the beginning of a more regular ‘just one’ or you’ll get yourself really worried. Make sure you have a contingency plan.

As long as it really is just that one then you should be fine

Thank you all for the responses. I spoke to my midwife today about it and she said exactly what you all have said. I'm pretty sure I won't smoke again now but will be extremely strict with myself!

Being strict with yourself sounds really hard though. I’m sure you’ve thought about it but maybe look into support? My DH swears by the Allan Carr book.

Thatsanicepear · 23/07/2019 15:55

@herocomplex it will be hard but I know that and will work hard at it. I never got on with the Allan Carr book but put that down to the fact I didn't really want to stop all that much. I do now though so might give it another bash if I find myself struggling.

I’m way beyond babies now, but when I had them most of my friends smoked, and I used to envy them the ‘time off’ they had for going off for a smoke. It’s not easy to give up. Worth it though, as you know!
