Loss of Appetite and weight loss in first trimester

I’ve just reached 12 weeks and since beginning of June (when I was about 4-5 weeks) I’ve lost a stone in weight.

I’ve had no morning sickness, so it isn’t because of that.

I’ve had a very small appetite, even though I’m hungry, I don’t really fancy any foods that I normally like that aren’t fatty and sugary (and know they are bad so obviously limiting them) and so I cook meals that while I don’t ‘fancy’, they are fairly healthy, but at most I can only eat half my normal portion (usually less) before I get full.

I know it’s normal to not gain very much in the first trimester, but I’m a bit concerned I’ve lost a fair bit (though now know what to do when baby arrives 😂)

Is this lack of appetite that is not due to morning sickness and weight loss normal?

I was the same - I'm now 21 weeks and have finally started to gain weight. Maybe have a chat with your midwife if concerned! Smile

I was the same, I didn't have a brilliant appetite at all through pregnancy I just felt uncomfortable and full or really bloated in the early days. In total I ended up gaining about a stone in weight and my baby was 6lb of it. I was quite concerned about it especially as I had a tiny bump and measured small but my midwives weren't concerned at all.

Ps. I had sugary cravings and was told that was typical if having a girl, I did indeed have a girl!

Mine was from morning sickness but I also lost a stone in the first trimester to no ill affect. In fact, I piled on 3 stone the rest of the pregnancy ..! Confused

I've had a lot of food aversions and low appetite and dinner time is now known as force feeding time to try and get some nutrition into me, it's horrendous. All I want is salt and vinegar crisps and I'm giving into that just to make sure in getting enough calories. Unless your midwife is concerned I wouldn't worry, the weight will likely start to come on throughout the second trimester

I was the same, then at some point in the second trimester I ballooned!

Thanks, I’ll probably mention it to my midwife next time I see her (unless I’ve started gaining significantly then).
Thanks for your reassurances, looks like I’ll take the weight loss while I can Grin

I'm in a similar boat! In fact I just posted a thread about it. I lost a few lbs because of morning sickness but have started eating around 1600 kcals a day for the last few days, and am still losing. Is this the same for anyone else? Quite worried because I've read unexplained weight loss is rare in the first trimester and a bad sign. Any advice appreciated! I'm 9+1. xxx

@ellereynolds91 could it be you’re only eating 1600 calories? I think daily recommended for non-pregnant women is usually 1800-2000. That’s the reason I’m losing so much, i am not eating as much.
Maybe speak to your midwife at your booking appointment if you’ve not had it yet, or maybe contact your midwife?

@bouncytigger85 thanks for the reply. Pre pregnancy I was following a 1200 kcal diet and was maintaining my weight. I read that in the first trimester you shouldn't need to eat any more than what you usually do which is why I was concerned. Could it be that I need more kcals now than I thought?
Haven't had an appt through to see the midwife yet so just looking for some advice from those in a similar boat Smile

BouncyTigger85 · 21/07/2019 15:25

Ah see I wasn’t on a specific calorie controlled diet beforehand, I just know I’m eating less than I was so that must equal less calories. Perhaps it is that you need more calories than you thought.
I’m not an expert though.
Fingers crossed your appointment is booked soon and you can ask the midwife there.
