Gag reflex!

Hi,

Anyone else’s gag reflex’s been extreme since being pregnant?
I think since the day the seed went in it’s been extremely difficult to brush my teeth. It’s gone from a 3 minute job in the morning and evening to 15/ 20 mins! To the point I’ve been late to work on several occasions. I’ve had no morning sickness and have only been sick once while brushing my teeth. I’ve tried eating before, not eating before, eating a little, nothing seems to work. I originally thought it would have only been at the beginning but currently 18 weeks and it’s still a issue.
I’m also now struggling to swallow tablets, something I’ve never had an issue with.

Anyone else’s gag reflex’s gone through the roof?

Thanks xxx

Not pregnant now, but this was exactly me when I was carrying DS. I think it's fairly widespread as a pregnancy symptom. Sympathies, OP, it's miserable. A word of advice -- do not try to have a dental appointment. It didn't go well.

Yep I've had this. I've not vomitted many times in pregnancy (just nausea) but all the times I have been sick have been when trying to swallow pills or when I've swallowed the tiniest piece of food wrong.

I found it was better for me in the morning than the evening (like my nausea) so I switched to taking all my pills in the morning. My nausea has eased off now (16 weeks) but the gag reflex is still going strong.

Yes! I've been gagging since 6 weeks, I've only been sick twice and both times it was while brushing my teeth, I've given up on trying to brush for a full 3 minutes and just try to brush for a minute or two. This is probably why they give women free dental care for a year after having a baby. Sad

I know this is very random but I have the same thing, at least while brushing my teeth, and the only thing that's helped is humming to myself as I brush. Possibly something to do with controlling my breathing? (Or possibly the distraction of DH's murderous looks at another verse of John Brown's Body... Grin)

Yes my gag reflex is terrible! I have found if I clamp my thumb in my hand when brushing my teeth (the other hand) it seems to stop me gagging, not sure if it's just because I'm concentrating on squeezing my thumb so hard! I must look so stupid!

Yes & I'm avoiding the dentist because of it.

Yes, mines due to bad reflux and morning sickness, i vomit and heave a lot. I use a baby's toothbrush which helps. My friend recommended kids bubblegum toothpaste as mint can make gag reflex worse.

What tablets are you taking? Can you switch to liquid? Flurodix?
