I hate the first trimester

Im nauseous, belching gas and feel really uncomfortable all day long. To top it off I am terribly bloated and constipated, which means I have to up my fibre and water intake which makes everything alot more gassy and uncomfortable. I hate this. Oh and I also have acne. When is this going to end? I think the digestive stuff really is whats bothering me. People say it will get better in the second trimester. But thats another 3 weeks away. Feels like forever. Does it really go away? And will the stomach problems get better?

Wait til you get to the 3rd! All jokes aside the first is tough. Symptoms ease up when you get to the 2nd.

scratchbass · 12/07/2019 08:13

I wish I could say that the stomach issues go away but mine didn't! The second trimester wasn't so bad, the bloating stopped and most other symptoms disappeared too. In third trimester my constipation led to piles.

You're already clued in to getting enough fibre and water, so my only advice is to drink a glass of prune juice before bed and go to your GP if you're uncomfortable or have any bleeding/pain etc. I'm taking daily lactulose as a preventative measure!

NathansMummy0203 · 12/07/2019 08:17

Only 3 weeks to go to your second trimester. Enjoy it as best you can as that's the most normal you will feel for a while. I've got 10 weeks to go so just into my 3rd and am not enjoying it at all. I never do. Feel like my bump has came from nowhere overnight so now struggling to do certain things, I'm uncomfortable and yeah worst of all is the digestive problems and the heartburn :-( never had the digestive issues with my first 2 and the heartburn is 10 times worse this time around too. I can't wait for my body to be empty again - that sounds really bad doesn't it!

WasABabe · 12/07/2019 08:18

The prune juice sounds like a good idea. Great, cannot wait for the third trimester 😒.
I know I sound ungrateful and like a complainbox. Most of people go through this. Its just that my stomach feels so weird that its upsetting my mood alot, making me really inactive and unhappy. I wish I could enjoy this pregnancy, I feel guilty to say that I don’t..

@WasABabe definitely with you here, and I’ve still got 5 weeks to go 😰 I’ve never felt so poorly in my life. The nausea is 24 hours a day, I’ve had horrendous pain and I feel like my digestive system will never go back to normal.
I hate sounding like a whinger, and I know it’s awful to say but I’m really willing these weeks away

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 12/07/2019 09:20

All of pregnancy is generally pretty awful tbh Blush

secretlyhermione · 12/07/2019 09:27

Hang in there! The first trimester is the worst (at least it was for me) but in the second trimester it usually gets much better. I'm 26 weeks now and feel much better than I did then!

MummyBear405 · 12/07/2019 10:31

Hey OP don't feel guilty for not enjoying it! This is my first pregnancy and it's nothing like I thought it'd be, I've basically been miserable for the last 6-7 weeks due to nausea, tiredness and dodgy blood sugar levels (being diabetic sucks enough without pregnancy hormones!!)

But so many people say it gets better, I'm 12 weeks on Monday and although I'm still vomiting it's not daily any more so that's a huge win for me! Hang in there and just do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel a little bit better, it'll all be worth it in the end! Smile

Dweebette · 12/07/2019 10:37

I'm with you OP! I'm 8+3 and had a complete meltdown yesterday. I'm exhausted, nauseous 80% of the day and so uncomfortable with digestive issues. I didn't think it would be like this, feeling utterly useless (the house is a mess and I've suddenly developed an aversion to meat so cooking is a struggle) and sorry for myself. 12 week scan feels like a lifetime away 😭

Everafter1 · 12/07/2019 11:45

I hated it too. Weeks 6-11 were horrid with the nausea, I was bed bound most days & I thought it would never end. I did get stemetil for it & it helped. Stopped taking that about week 12.
Gradually lifted from 14 weeks, now 18 weeks & it's gone. Every day that passes you're closer to feeling better!
You can do this! I hope you get some relief soon.

Falafel19 · 12/07/2019 12:14

Don't feel guilty at all, a lot of the symptoms make for a very miserable time day to day.

Autumnalfeels · 12/07/2019 12:53

Just wait till the 3rd. I'm. Finding it horrible. I liked the first, apart from the neausious feeling, but the gas etc I'm having with the 3rd lol

Personita · 12/07/2019 13:37

Yeah... the 1st trimester is awful Sad I'm 12+2 with DC2, still vomiting, still exhausted. And if it's anything like my 1st pregnancy, I've got a couple more weeks of this before I start feeling better. Plus none of my clothes fit anymore so I feel like a fat frump in baggy t-shirts til I'm big enough for proper maternity clothes.

But it does get better in the 2nd trimester and once you've got a proper bump and can feel baby moving and kicking it's a totally different experience Smile

Dr273 · 12/07/2019 14:06

Other tips for bloating inc peppermint/nettle/ginger teas, fresh ginger (just chew on some root) and dried fruits, raisins, apricots, dates... And exercise as much as you can. I found light exercise did nothing and I was too stiff with bloating to bend in the middle, but running fast gave me temporary instant relief and gradually helped overall.
Best high fibre food I came up with is muesli because you get a lot from a small portion and it's hard to eat much when you're enormously bloated.
I hated it too. Now very nauesous instead, only a little bloated, and that sucks. I am counting down the days until my placenta should be complete and nausea ease off... Not solved that one yet.

Fae1989 · 12/07/2019 14:41

I feel your pain. I had awful morning sickness and acid reflux in my first trimester. Then I got flu. Not fun.

I’m now 36+3 and whilst I feel heavy and uncomfortable, it’s actually not as bad as the first! I can’t wait for the acid reflux to do one though.

I’ve come across a lot of women who didn’t enjoy pregnancy. It’s a tough time, your body is going through a million changes and symptoms. I realised it’s okay not to enjoy it. I haven’t really enjoyed mine but I’ve dealt with it and I can’t wait to meet my beautiful boy soon!

Hang in there, things generally do get better :)

Fae1989 · 12/07/2019 14:42

Ps my tip for acid reflux or heartburn is watermelon! Absolutely divine in this heat too :)

mistermagpie · 12/07/2019 14:53

It's grim, it's fucking grim. For me it eases off at around 14 weeks, I'm nearly 20 weeks now and the horror of the first trimester is a distant memory - I feel great!

This is my third pregnancy and it does get tough towards the end, but nothing is as bad as the first trimester in my experience.

larr7 · 12/07/2019 15:21

This post has made me feel so much better that other people are feeling like this! I've been off work for three weeks. Constant nausea and feel exhausted, not getting out of bed much these days. Everything makes me want to throw up, rarely actually sick though. It's absolutely horrendous. I feel like an awful person for moaning about it. I've actually had days where I've debated if I can actually do this. I'm 9 weeks in. Counting down to the 12 week mark in the hope I will miraculously feel better! I have a 12 year old and my pregnancy with him seems so easy now compared to this one!

Dweebette · 12/07/2019 16:31

@larr7 snap! Last night I was questioning how ill be able to cope with a baby when I can't cope with these symptoms. I haven't been sick yet but have had nausea for 3 weeks (I'm 8+3) and it's horrendous, plus developing an inability to stay awake. I feel like a rubbish wife and friend because I'm so useless right now

larr7 · 12/07/2019 16:37

@dweebette me too! My best friend has just moved and I haven't done anything to help. Im moving in 1st august as well and have no idea how im going to manage it 😫 My partner is away on training this week and the house is in the same state it was when he left. I'm literally at home doing nothing. My 12 year old has been amazing, juggling school work and coming home to help me out. I literally can't wait for this part to pass!

Dweebette · 12/07/2019 16:39

Oh wow @larr7 good luck with the move! And bless your 12 year old looking after their mum and me sibling, what a great older sibling they'll make!

QueenBeex · 12/07/2019 16:40

Im in my second trimester and I still feel like you've described in your OP, apart from my anti sickness tablets have helped loads with actually being sick but I still get the feeling.

larr7 · 12/07/2019 16:50

@QueenBeex when we're you given the anti sickness tablets? I asked about them but my doctor said they come with risks. Maybe because it's the first trimester?

Maybbabi · 12/07/2019 17:49

I’m so pleased I’ve seen this post OP. I have felt horrendous for the last few weeks. Yesterday was particularly bad (terrible in fact). This is my first pregnancy so I don’t know what the third trimester is like. All I can think about is getting to week 12 and hoping that the next trimester gives me some relief. At least there are so many lovely ladies on MN so you know that you’re not the only one or going through it alone. Tomorrow’s a new day and one day closer to the second trimester Smile

QueenBeex · 12/07/2019 19:21

larr7 around 3 weeks ago if I remember correctly! My sickness before that was ridiculous though, maybe see another doctor? There's many different types they can give.
