Drinking water before scan help, please

Morning all.

It’s (finally) the day of my 12-week scan. Could anyone please just suggest a ‘good’ amount of water to drink and how long before hand? Letter just asks for ‘full bladder’. I remember going for my scan when pregnant with my DD and was too full and so uncomfortable - the sonographer asked me to go and do a ‘half-wee’! 😬 Want to avoid that if possible but want to be full enough that the scan can be performed!

Thank you x

About a pint 45 mins before works for me.

I just drink a normal about but don’t have a wee for the hour before.

Thank you both! x

I did what WhenZo does, drank normally but didn’t wee for an hour before. Never had a problem with them getting what they needed.

I had a recent ultrasound and was told to drink 1 litre an hour before, so I drank two bottles of fizzy water. When I went through for my scan, she said there was hardly any in my bladder 🙄. Maybe it varies on how long it takes to get through. I’d probably drink a litre an hour and a half before hand.

Phone the hospital or wherever you're having the scan and ask them to specify.

I drank a pint of water literally before I left the house because I was worried about needing the toilet

My last 2 pg i never needed to drink water before hand🤔 was on my letter it wasnt required. Maybe its different in other areas. Id say half hour or so should be ok, did that with first and had nice full bladder after drinking a litre.

My notes said a pint 45 minutes before the appointment of still water. Good luck. Hope all goes well x

My scan letters for 12 and 20 weeks ask for 1 and a half pints of still (not fizzy) water an hour before - so your bladder should feel full but not uncomfortable. At my emergency scan on 11 weeks I panic-drank about 2 litres and was told to empty my bladder several times during the appointment, was torture 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Mrsmummy90 · 08/07/2019 10:30

My letters have always said 1-1.5 pints of water an hour before x

I was addicted to lucozade when my scan happened, I just had a bottle in the car on the way down. Just the normal small size. Was bursting to pee anyway after just drinking that....

My pre-scan notes from private say drink 1 pint (0.5 litre) an hour before. My NHS one says 1 litre.

Thank you everyone! I drank a pint and a half an hour before - the sonographer did the first part of the scan, found a wriggly baby and heartbeat ❤️ and then said, “Ooh, I’ve just noticed how full your bladder is - you can go to the loo and empty it, the you’ll be a bit more comfortable!” So glad it’s an empty bladder for the 20-week scan! x
