Hi guys,

I have a scan booked tomorrow, that's been booked for a while now to look at a cyst on one of ovaries.

Ive just been wondering...

Obviously I'll have to make them aware that I'm pregnant, but I don't know how far along (anywhere between 5-6 weeks as I came off the pill at the end of May and we weren't expecting things to happen so quickly!) will they still scan me? And if they do will they look for baby at the same time or purely look for the cyst?

Thanks in advance and sorry for waffling on 😂

Hi HoneyBee833,

first of all, really hope tomorrow goes well!

Have you seen a GP or let a midwife know you're pregnant yet? If so it would be on your notes and I'd imagine they would check everything since they are scanning that region and your uterus won't be that big yet? You can have a private scan as early as 6 weeks to see if you're pregnant, so you never know, they may just have a look!

Hi @HoneyBee833, this exact thing happened to me last week. I was 7 weeks pregnant, but had confirmed the scan before I found out I was pregnant. I called my GP when I found out about the pregnancy to check whether I should still go to the scan, and she said I may as well but to let them know I'm pregnant and to be prepared that they may not scan me...
When I got to the hospital, the sonographer said that she would've be able to do the scan unfortunately as she wasn't trained in fetal stuff and wouldn't know what to do if she found something wrong. She also said the equipment was older than what you get at obstetric ultrasound places, so the images wouldn't be as good. She said that they have a look at ovaries at the 12 week scan, so to wait until then.
I was a bit upset (had really got my hopes up that I'd see my little bean!) but her reasoning was completely understandable and the right thing to do at the end of the day

Thank you so much for your responses @ceilidhat @Goose4!

I did go and see my gp last week and she didn't mention anything about cancelling it. I'll just have to mention it to them when I get there tomorrow and see what they want to do. I don't see my midwife until 15th.

I do understand if they won't do it though, it's not worth the risks is it.

Thanks again xx

I had an early scan at 7+5 and they found a large ovarian cyst which they said they will check up on at the same time as my dating scan which will be when I'm 12+6 so it's perfectly possible for them to do both at the same time, just depends on the sonographer. Good luck :)

Hi @HoneyBee833 slightly different scenario but I had an internal ultrasound at 8+3 following IVF to check viability of the pregnancy during which they also scanned my ovaries to check for cysts and fluid. The only thing I'd warn you is that you might not be able to see much more than a gestational sac at such an early stage of pregnancy so try not to panic if they don't find a foetal pole or heartbeat.

Thank you for your replies @Charm23 & @TwistofFate .

Had my scan earlier this afternoon, they managed to get what they needed from an external ultra sound and said it looks as though the cyst has now gone. They just advised me to make the sonographer aware when I have my 12 week scan xx
