Sponge cravings?

I can not stop biting into sponges (not chewing or swallowing don't worry) it just tastes too good. This has only happened since being pregnant for the record. OH is completely repulsed!!!
Anyone else have/had this?

On another note since being pregnant, the thought of

  • Meat
  • Marmite (I'm a lover)
  • Butter
  • Potatoes
  • Bananas
Make me feel physically sick.

My cravings that are actually foods are

  • Pasta mixed with HP sauce OML you need to try it's other wordly.
  • Percy pigs fgs
  • Bowls of plain mushy peas

What about you?

Sounds like Pica, which you should speak to your midwife about.

I ate sponges

MeepMeepMoop · 06/07/2019 16:53

Wow this has taken me back to childhood! I remember chewing sponges when in the bath. Loved the feel of them against my teeth. You've made me seriously want to chew a sponge now! So mine wasn't pregnancy related!

Grin I just wanted mash and I hate mash normally.

I THINK wanting sponge relates to low iron or some mineral does it? I could have made that up.

@IHaveBrilloHair @MeepMeepMoop

So glad it's not just me! (Although I don't eat them Grin) there is something about them.

@changechange @DippyAvocado

Just looked it up, and yes both of those things are possible. And sponge chewing is a real thing - not just me!

I will raise it with my midwife just to be sure.

I wanted to eat chalk and it turned out to be anemia. I had a bottle of calcium tablets with a gritty/chalky texture and I would open them up and eat the powder slowly as it felt like the most delicious thing in the world (lol). The pica went away as soon as my iron levels became normal.

With the sponge, I had to wear this hideous tartan waistcoat at the time, uniform, not my choice, but it had pockets and I used to fill them with bite sized pieces of sponge.
Grin
(I'm still not over the having to wear a green tartan waistcoat, it looked marvellous on a pregnant woman)

Twice I've been obsessed with eating sponge. Once I was pregnant, the other is now. Both times, I'm anaemic and iron deficient

So annoyed I forgot to buy some yesterday
