Hi all,

I'm 40 + 4 today and booked for a sweep tomorrow. Baby wasn't engaged at midwife app last week and I haven't felt any twinges or much pressure down below so I'm pretty sure it's still not engaged Hmm

I'm just looking for some advice as my ten year old son flies out to Florida with his dad this Saturday on the trip of a lifetime booked over a year ago. My son is sensitive and I know he won't want to go if the baby isn't here yet, I went early with him so I didn't worry about going overdue but here I am!

Reading up on sweeps I am aware that it's pretty
Much 50/50 success rate. I was up at maternity ward last Friday for a change in movements and the nurse pretty much said I can request an induction if I want - I'm in Scotland and we had a heatwave for a few days so I think she could see I was struggling!

What I'm wondering am I best seeing how the sweep goes first and then if that comes to nothing can I request an induction ? My usual midwife wasn't at my previous app and of course I forgot to ask useful questions!

Thanks

Hi there! I had a sweep on Wednesday. Midwife said 25% chance. It’s done bugger all but I’m glad I did it because it meant she had a chance to “evaluate the situation” i.e. could tell me how dilated etc I was. She said it works within 48 hours, and I’ve read 24 online. An induction could take that long, so if you can be patient it may be worth just trying a sweep first?

@thundermum is it just 25% chance Shock good
Point I think I will keep the appointment so they can hopefully let me know how things are looking! I know a friend who had three sweeps so not getting my hopes up!

I didn’t know Scotland had heatwaves btw 😉 I’m down on the south coast, hit 30 degrees yesterday and it was awful! I just didn’t feel like I could get hydrated. (Am 40+5) so am definitely sending empathy your way. I should think you still have time to be induced before your son flies 🤞🏻

@thundermum they're very rare lol, thankful for that just now back to the usual rain!

Someone suggested cooling spray to me if you have a Superdrug nearby Smile

Thanks! I have a feeling baby is just comfy and not up for moving but if he or she could make an appearance before the weekend it would be fab!

They should book you to be induced on the 12th day past your due date. My midwife did, I had 2 sweeps after due date and nothing!

@Staceyle29 went in today for a sweep and cervix still closed so booked in to begin induction tomorrow night Smile
