So today I’m six Weeks pregnant. I haven’t been to a midwife yet. When I woke up I went to the toilet and there was brownish blood. Is his normal. I’m so scared as have been getting bearable full pains in my belly. It’s read this was normal. This is my first pregnancy and I’m so scared that something’s gone wrong

I’m going to be honest, period-like cramping and bleeding together is quite often a sign that the pregnancy is ending. I’m so sorry 😞
There’s basically nothing that can really be done to prevent this, but it’s not something you’ve caused, but this is about the time that approx 15-20% of pregnancies end because they just aren’t made up right.

You may be able to get a referral to you local Early Pregnancy Unit through your GP or through A&E, try googling facilities first in case yours is self-referral. They will conduct a Trans Vaginal ultrasound to see what is where.
Please take someone with you xxx

Spotting in early pregnancy is Normal, along with some Mild period like Pains.
Please book in with your Midwife . For reassurance & help if you need it :)
Congratulations by the way x

Congrats firstly. I had this with baby number 2 . Had brown blood and cramps at 5 weeks and 6 weeks. Passed a lot of blood towards the end also. Shes now early 2. Midwife said fresh red blood is worrying whereas brown blood can be implantation or old blood. Best to get it checked all the same. Best of luck

zombiethread · 28/06/2019 07:58

I had this with both of my healthy pregnancies.
My midwife said it was normal too.
If pains or bleeding get worse or blood is bright then that's more worrying.
Thanks it's such a worrying time during the early stages.

amyyy333 · 28/06/2019 08:20

Thank you for your advice, I’m just so scared as don’t really know what to expect. The pains are no where near as bad as period pains they are more like an ache . I’m just hoping everything is okay

Aching is normal. Mine would come and go and shoot around my pelvis. Sometimes they felt like the very very beginnings of period pain but didn't last long.

Some blood, esp if brown is normal for some women. I didn't get it but many do.

Book in to see the midwife. The earlier the better, imo to get the ball rolling.

I had this at 6 weeks with my last pregnancy - contacted the MW and had a trans vaginal scan at 8 weeks and everything was ok. I now have a lovely little 15m old. It can really go either way but the best thing you can do is try not to worry - you have not caused this and there is nothing you can do to control it. The only thing you can do is phone the MW to hopefully get some peace of mind.

Good luck - I know it's such a worrying time!

amyyy333 · 28/06/2019 12:16

I can’t get hold of my midwife and haven’t had a first appointment with her yet. The bleeding is very light and a sort of light brown colour only when I wipe

MumApr18 · 28/06/2019 12:44

Don't worry @amyyy333 - as harsh as it sounds they can't do anything ASAP anyway. Perhaps try your GP?

Falafel19 · 28/06/2019 12:47

Cramps and red bleeding might indicate a miscarriage but brown blood is usually old blood, so that info above isn't entirely accurate. Cramping is normal as your uterus and muscles all expand, a bit of brown spotting is very normal, as I said that's usually old blood so whatever caused it has stopped already. Can get an early scan at 7 weeks if you like.

Wishing56 · 28/06/2019 12:50

@amyyy333 i am in the same situation. I am 6+2. Last night when I wiped it was very light pink and this morning it was just brown. I had aches last night (not full blown cramps).
At the moment i am just seeing how it goes and havent contacted the GP yet. I havent got a midwife contact yet either.
If anything gets worse over the weekend then i will call 111 for advice.

Angelinthenightx · 28/06/2019 13:01

Ive had bad cramps with this pregnancy from 5wks im now 21wks, brown blood maybe old blood ,if it was red then id say something maybe wrong. Contact early maternity unit they will see u ,check u over ,ive been in 5x already & they are so nice, dont sit waiting they are there to help x

JaJu14 · 28/06/2019 13:16

Light cramping is normal around this time I had it with my 1st baby and I'm now 10 weeks and still having the odd light twinge.
I've never had spotting but I know some women do get it and go on to have healthy babies. Don't know if it helps but apparently my great grandmother had periods all the way through her pregnancies.

HayleyHaystack · 28/06/2019 13:22

Find your nearest EPU (early pregnancy unit) usually connected to a hospital. Just turn up if it’s not clear how to book. You will either have to wait a while or will be given a time. Also contact your GP in case it’s quicker to get a referral there. Don’t sit at home and wait for more worrying symptoms - get seen, it’s exactly what these units are for, anyone under 12 weeks of pregnancy. You are not wasting time.

Wishing56 · 28/06/2019 13:51

@amyyy333 after my message i am having a lot more brown blood so have called my GP. I have an appointment at 4pm today. They then decide if need a referral to EPU.

mistermagpie · 28/06/2019 14:21

Unfortunately it can be totally normal (I've had this and went on to have a healthy baby) and it can also be the signs of a miscarriage. I'm sorry, it really is very cruel.

Good luck at your appointment, I've got everything crossed for you xx

Teddybear45 · 28/06/2019 14:28

I had really pale brown spotting but only on the tissue with severe back pain around the time my period would have been due. As long as it stays brown and doesn’t get worse it should be normal.

amyyy333 · 28/06/2019 18:27

Ive tried ringing my local antenatal clinic at the hospital but had no answer

OP posts:
Purplequalitystreet · 28/06/2019 18:35

I had this at 6 weeks. It lasted about a week and I was stressed to death. Basically, it can go either way. But generally brown blood rather than red is a positive sign. Go to your GP. Mine was able to refer me for an early scan at the EPU.

HayleyHaystack · 28/06/2019 19:17

They are likely to be closed now @amyyy333 try the pregnancy advice line connected to your hospital that might be open - otherwise call first thing tomorrow or just turn up. Also try midwife assessment units at your hospital

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 28/06/2019 19:45

You're too early in the pregnancy for anyone in an antenatal clinic or a midwife to be of assistance to you. If you're having on-going (not just a sort, or a smear when you wipe) period type, bleeding from the vagina, or severe (doubled over in pain type) cramps then you should go to A&E, otherwise at 6 weeks the only thing any midwife will tell you is to rest, stay hydrated, take paracetamol, or a warm hot water bottle for any achiness and wait to see - usually these things pass. I wouldn't get too worried about not being able to call a midwife as she's not the person who would deal with any issues this early in the pregnancy - it would be an A&E Dr.

Wingingit9212 · 28/06/2019 19:46

Get yourself to a GP, out of hours, tomorrow if you can and they will arrange for an early scan. I had brown bleeding at around this time, but all was well. Wishing you all the best 💐💐

cakesandphotos · 28/06/2019 22:04

I had terrible cramping around 6-8 weeks. Brown blood is old blood, probably just worked it's way down. See if you can get an appointment at the EPU to set your mind at rest

Wishing56 · 28/06/2019 22:05

@amyyy333 my GP told me to go to A&E. 3 hours later just got home. I was seen by a gynaecologist who did an internal exam to check my cervix. He said it was closed and no blood at the top so he is fairly happy its just implantation bleeding.

I have to have bloods done on Monday and Wednesday to check whether HCG level is doubling.

If you have any concerns this weekend you can call 111 and they will be able to advise and tell you if you should go A&E.

Hope you are ok.

amyyy333 · 29/06/2019 11:06

I’ve rang the clinic this morning and they have said I can go to see a doctor but I won’t have a scan today. Not sure what a doctor will actually do at the early pregnancy unit
