Nitrofurantoin

I'm 14+3 weeks, been diagnosed with a bladder and kidney infection. They've prescribed antibiotics called Nitrofurantoin, 50mg, 4 a day for 7 days.
Has anyone else had these? I'm worried about the effect they could have on the baby. Plus the side affects as I've been suffering from upset stomach enough as it is

Didn’t want to read and run as no one has replied yet!
Check out the nhs website, basically says nitrofurantoin is safe in pregnancy!
Hope you feel better soon! x

Yes they are safe in pregnancy. Doctor wouldn't have prescribed them otherwise.

I was on them at around 15 weeks. You'll be doing more harm than good by letting an infection rage on. If you have side effects , call the gp and they will try and find another solution.

It’s totally safe :) and it’s more dangerous to have an untreated infection spreading.

I take nitrofurantoin regularly, several times per week before and during this pregnancy, as I take them after sex to prevent UTI. My doctor is happy with it. The only time nitrofurantoin is to be avoided is the final few weeks of pregnancy and you’re months away from that, and even then if you have an infection you are still treated with antibiotics just a different type.

There’s a lot of scaremongering around pregnant women and medication I’ve noticed, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard ‘I’m so miserable because I can’t take anything obviously cos I’m pregnant’ when there’s just no need. There’s plenty of research out there on which medications are safe and unsafe during pregnancy and they have some really solid evidence of safety to prescribe a med to a pregnant woman.

If it makes you feel any better I’m on a massive dose of morphine, every day, during pregnancy, again all under doctor’s supervision and they’re happy with it or wouldn’t be prescribing it. Really, your little one will be fine.

I virtually lived off these in my last pregnancy.
One UTI would clear up and another would follow.

Please don't worry.
