Hey all. Husband bought me some pregnacare max this weekend to take but I have just read a few posts about midwives not promoting this. Is this anyone else's experience?! Don't have my first appt for 3 weeks and not sure whether to take them! I'm 7 weeks tomorrow. Thanks x

Do you have a midwife yet? If so it'll be worth asking her.

I personally just took the normal Pregnacare and tried to eat healthily (bar the odd chocolate etc binge eat!) and everything was fine.

Former midwife here, never advised again pregnacare max. It’s got everything advised, plus omega 3 which isn’t in your usual supplements. I can’t see any reason why you’d be advised not to take it, where did you hear midwives don’t advise it?

nuggles · 22/06/2019 15:10

I’ve taken pregnacare max with first two pregnancies plus this one.

Midwife has always encouraged it x

JellyBaby666 · 22/06/2019 15:10

Just to add, I never promoted pregnacare specifically, it’s expensive when all you need for a folic acid & vit D which you can buy or get prescribed which is much much cheaper. However, the other things in a multivitamin are good and so aren’t dissuaded against but there are many generic brands of vitamin, and as I said I would advise A vitamin, just not pregnacare specifically.

Pregnacare was actively promoted by the midwife at my booking appointment, they even gave a free box. I bought the pregnacare plus omega 3 and it's worked well for me, hopefully working well for baby too!

All the fertility clinics I attended, all of the fertility specialists I saw, all of the GPs and all of the midwives recommended Pregnacare Max. However they only do this if you aren’t on benefits / qualify for free vitamins; my midwife has a whole stock of something she calls healthy start vitamins that she gives away for free to people who qualify. Everybody else gets a sample pack of Pregnacare Max and get told to buy that when it runs out.

Interesting, in my area everyone is given both a full supply of the NHS healthy start vitamins plus a couple of sample boxes of Pregnacare (two weeks’ worth total). It’s not means tested at all. I actually declined the second lot of the NHS vitamins so someone else could use them as I’d decided on Pregnacare and knew I wouldn’t use them. I wanted more than just the bare bones that are in the healthy start vitamins.

Apparently Vitabiotics adjust the ingrediants based on latest pregnancy research. The calcium was included as it helps protects against preclampsia for longer. The Omega 3 supports brain development. Etc etc

Kate3150 · 22/06/2019 18:58

I take pregnacare max, obviously hard to know if it’s doing any real good but that’s the only range I’ve used even when TTC.
Only downside I would say is the cost but other than that wouldn’t use anything else xx

fonxey · 22/06/2019 19:11

I can't swallow those massive omega 3 tablets. I can just about swallow the pregnacare tablets.

So i got an omega 3 oil to eat. It's vile. So my baby better be a genius.

I've been taking pregnacare maxi since I was about 7 weeks, hadn't seen the midwife at this point but my gp actively encouraged me to get it, said he'd even got his wife to take it during her pregnancy. Midwife said it's not necessary but wasn't going to do any harm when I eventually saw her

Inthesky42 · 22/06/2019 19:42

I'm taking pregnacare max. Im lactose intolerant and don't drink milk and it's the only multi vit that includes calcium. My mum ended up with early onset osteoporosis for the same reason.. Baby takes all your calcium! So I'm committed to them

PuffsMummie · 22/06/2019 20:46

I’ve taken them and been fine. Was never advised against them.

Also wasn’t given any free packs of vitamins, surprised to read others were as they’re not cheap! I’d have liked some freebie ones

My midwife has not recommended me to take any multivitamins, she advised Vit D throughout pregnancy and folic up to 14 weeks. My blood tests have always come back normal for vits and minerals. She said they recommend them only for women whose blood tests have shown deficiency or if the diet is lacking in the requirments.

Beingnicetomyself · 22/06/2019 21:09

Just be careful if you are taking lots of different vitamins/minerals. I was stupid and took pregnacare and also additional iron and b vitamin supplements (feroglobin) because I was tired and thought I needed them. I ended up with b12 and folic acid above the reference range which has been shown to actually increase various risks..

Aw great thanks everyone. It was just some comments I saw on some threads but they may have been personal to the posters for different reasons. I will start them tomorrow!!
