I’m a long term poster but have name changed for obvious reasons. I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and finding it really hard to just trust everything is ok. I’m thinking of booking an early scan but I was wondering if I’d be able to have it trans-abdominally being so early? I was sexually assaulted a few years ago and have found any kind of internal examinations quite traumatic ever since. I do realise I could just call up and ask but it’s not something I find easy to talk about in real life. Thanks

Hey @GardenOfSimple123 I had a scan this week at 8+1 and it was clear on an abdominal scan. Hopefully you should be ok with this. The sonographer said they may need to do internal if your uterus tilts back but I think by 8 weeks abdominal is usually fine. Good luck Thanks

Are you a normal-ish BMI? Then at 8 weeks it will be fine. Go with a full bladder.
If very overweight they may struggle.

Go with a full bladder and at 8 weeks they should be able to do abdo scan, if they do say it needs to be transvaginal then just explain your situation and I'm sure they will be very accommodating to your needs.

I had my early scan at 9+2 and was a normal abdominal scan.

Defo go for it if it will put your mind at ease

Depends on your weight xx

I had one at 6+6 (viability scan for ivf pregnancy) and was expecting them to do it TV however the sonographer said he’d try TA first and see how we got on - detected 2 foetuses and 2 heartbeats. My bmi was approximately 28/29 at the time so overweight!!

GardenOfSimple123 · 22/06/2019 18:57

Ok sounds like they’d be able to do it trans abdominally hopefully. I am a little bit overweight, still haven’t lost all the baby weight from having my one year old. That’s really reassuring Rememberallball, I had no idea they could detect a pregnancy so early without an internal. Hope the pregnancy went well!

I had an early scan this week at 6 + 0 because of a bleed. Was fully expecting internal but they did abdominal and saw a very clear heartbeat.

Mintypea5 · 22/06/2019 19:24

I've had a quite a few early scans and always been abdominal from 6 weeks onwards (I'm overweight) so should be fine.

Rememberallball · 23/06/2019 12:22

@GardenOfSimple123, going well so far - am 25+3 with them at the moment and due to see midwife tomorrow and scan/anc on Thursday as one of my little monkey’s takes delight in dropping below the 10th centile (though appears otherwise ok) when I’m scanned!!

agteacht · 23/06/2019 13:07

Hey @GardenOfSimple123 I had one at 8 weeks abdominally. I would have had internal if that hadn't worked but I insisted they started with the abdominal and it was fine. Good luck x
