Big baby

Hi there,

I'm currently 38 weeks and 4 days pregnant and I've had a growth chart done for my baby after a scan. He's coming up to be around 8 lbs and 8 ounces right now and I'm sort of scared.

I've got a DD (born 9lbs 4 ounces by csection) shes 5 now and DS (born 8lbs 4 ounces naturally) who is 3. The consulting doctor said they'll induce me around 40 to 41 weeks. In my mind I'm thinking if this baby is already big what's he going to be like in 2 weeks time Shock

The nurse that was in the consultation room said that a baby's shoulders can get stuck and that put me on edge even more.

Is there anyone out there who has had a similar experience with a big baby to help calm my nerves down a bit? Or am I overreacting?

Thanks

Babies put on 1lb every two weeks so your current baby is a similar size to your DD. Growth scans have a tolerance of 15% so your baby maybe 15% smaller or 15% larger.

NICE and RCOG guidelines are not to induce for a big baby. Induction is a risk factor for a baby to get their shoulder stuck.

I’m in a similar situation. One DD who was born at 40+4 by EMCS and was 9lb 9oz and my current baby is predicted to be 10lb at 40 weeks.

I will be watching this thread closes for other replies.

Remember doctors will offer you induction at 40 weeks and you can say yes, or no I’ll wait or no I want an ELCS.

Ds1 was induced at 40wks as he was measuring large. Unfortunately the induction failed and he was born by c-section 2 days after his due date at 10lbs. DS2 also measured large for dates and was born by elcs at 38weeks weighing 9lbs 11oz. I hoped for a vbac but my consultant advised against it due to ds2 size and other risk factors, I was not well enough anyway due to other health issues by the time ds2 was due.

Yes my ds, they kept saying he was a big baby and they needed to get him out by his due date as he was going to be 10 pounds.
They tried a sweep at 38 and 39 weeks, then induction at 39+5. He was born at 39+6 and was 10lb 12 oz Shock
I pushed him out while only ending up with a small tear! And found the labour and birth a lot easiet

Sorry hit post by mistake.
The labour, birth and recovery have been much better than last time with my 9lb 6oz baby, so really I would say try not to panic x

My baby girl consistently measured on the 90th centile and was 8lb8 when born at 40+2
