I did a quick check of my cervix, currently 12 + 1 with 2nd and i was really taken back to find its really very open and soft, i have my 12 week scan on saturday and not sure if its something worth mentioning? i have a uterine abnormality and my DS was born at 34 weeks but nothing was ever mentioned about my cervix. Im consultant lead this time but not sure if ill meet with them after 12 week scan x

How much experience/ training do you have of assessing cervix?

Sleepycat91 · 20/06/2019 19:08

Why is that relevent? Ive checked my own cervix and its open and im worried about it and ive had recurrent miscarriages and i posted about it

Because you may not be checking it correctly. If you are concerned then you should ring your midwife.

Bambamber · 20/06/2019 19:20

If it's not your first baby it is common for the cervix to remain slightly open. The scan is usually with a sonographer rather than a midwife so I don't know if that is something they would really look into. Have you got a number for your community midwife? You could always have a chat with them

FlatPackPat · 20/06/2019 19:22

Hi @Sleepycat91 congrats on your pregnancy!

I have to agree with @hormonesorDHbeingadick that unless you really know what you're feeling for then you're potentially worrying yourself over nothing. I wouldn't have a clue what to feel for and I'm also pg with DC2.

If you're concerned then definitely talk to your midwife about it.

Sleepycat91 · 20/06/2019 19:24

I know i have nothing to compare to what it should be like but was open enough i could of put my finger in there. I have such bad anxiety due to all our losses and im so convinced something is going to go wrong im a wreck. I know i cant do anything about it either way and im not helping myself but i cant help it x

A lot of women cause cervical problems when they check their cervix (introducing infections / opening the cervix accidentally etc). If you are concerned discuss it with your midwife. They can check if everything’s normal.

IDontDrinkTea · 20/06/2019 19:26

If you keep checking it, it will open slightly Hmm since putting a finger through it is essentially what the midwives do when doing a stretch and sweep... perhaps it’d be better to leave well alone?

Mintypea5 · 20/06/2019 19:33

@Sleepycat91 I know you're worried but it's not a good idea to be poking around your cervix. If you're concerned please call your midwife who can examine you properly.

JuniperNarni · 20/06/2019 22:54

Don't mess about with your cervix, you could cause infections and disturb it.

If you have a uterine abnormality and a previous premature birth, you should be seeing a consultant and you should be having regular cervical length scans.

Angelinthenightx · 21/06/2019 19:20

If your worried contact a midwife. Dont mess with your cervix, your going to have to tell them that u have done this incase u have caused damage ,ive had mine checked and even a midwife wouldnt touch it they only look, ive had prem babies and get the length of mine checked got mine done this week ,seek advice and help for your worries x
