So I'm diabetic which means I've been prescribed 5mg tabs but I ran out on Sunday and my new supply only just arrived today.

Is that going to have a big impact on baby? Should I admit it to my midwife?

Didn't think too much of it but DH has kind of worried me slightly! Confused

Tbh I think it will be fine! With DS1 I didn't take it at all because I didn't find out I was pregnant until after 12 weeks

DS2 I forgot loads as well. Unsurprisingly have forget this time too

I have never taken Folic Acid in any of my pregnancies of which I have had three with three healthy babies.

Try not to worry and stress about it as it is likely to be fine.

Speak to the midwife if you need some reassurance.

I wouldn't worry OP, remember a lot of people will have had sickness that led them to missing a lot more doses. I'd maybe mention it at next midwife appointment but only because I'm confident she will reassure you rather than telling you off. You could also get an off the shelf pack of the normal dose ones to take just in case you have them same thing happen again (take the normal dose, I mean, not your increased dose, I'm not sure if the other ingredients would be ok in the larger amount?)

Plenty of women can get all the folic acid they need from diet and there's women who don't even realise they're pregnant so don't take it at all, the defects that can be caused by lack of folic acid aren't common at all. Plus it was a few days! Tell your midwife because she'll be able to re-assure you. It'll be fine.

The reason diabetics are given extra folic acid is that their kids are more at risk of developing neural tube defects and things like preclamsia etc. If you are past 4 weeks then the neural tube development is completed so the only impact is your health, which should be okay if you just missed 1 week. If you are under 4 weeks then have a word with your midwife because missing a week might be more of a problem.

I wouldn’t worry. I took them while trying to get pregnant and for the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. Then the hyperemesis gravidarum hit and they went out the window. I remember worriedly asking the doctor in the hospital about it and she not to worry I had done a good job taking them before hand and some during the pregnancy. And that many foods today like cereals and bread were fortified with folic acid so the tablets aren’t your only source.
