In Hospital having steroids

Hey all.
So I have gestational diabetes (diagnosed at 28weeks). Only came for a my routine 36 week growth scan at 8:40 yesterday morning, by 2pm I was in a ward, on 2 lots of insulin a day, steroid injections for 48 hours and unable to go home!
In 10 mins the doctors plan went from inducing me before 39 weeks to getting her out at 37! I'll be 37 weeks on Thursday so not a lot of time! Steroids finish at 2am tomorrow (Wednesday).
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences?
Those steroids in the bum cheek... OUCHY!!

No experience op but wanted to wish you luck! You and your baby are in the best place!

Sleepycat91 · 18/06/2019 08:16

Yep and my nurse did mine while i was asleep, safe to say i hit the ceiling!!

Lovelycabinet · 18/06/2019 09:58

I had something similar but my dd went into distress and was born before the second injection. My sugar levels went crazy ( readings as high as 25! ). She was born healthy albeit small and is doing very very well at 13 months now. Good luck and hope all goes well.

OctoberGirl91 · 18/06/2019 10:23

Aww gosh hope everything is ok. I am 30+4 also have GD diagnosed at 27 weeks currently on metformin twice a day and due another growth scan today. Can I ask if you were on insulin before they admitted you after your growth scan? And what the reason is for bringing it forward, never had GD before this is my third baby and it worries me.

Sympathy for the steroid injections I had them when my last DD was born at 35+5 and would love to avoid them again if I can 🙈 xx

pilchy · 18/06/2019 12:09

Thank you everyone!

@OctoberGirl91 no they only put me on insulin yesterday after my 3rd growth scan. But because my sugars were still up and down they said they like to get the baby out ASAP when on insulin. But the steroids also cause high readings so thats why I have to stay in Confused
They're now saying they want to induce me today, no point going home after steroids. Just waiting to see the doctor!

@Sleepycat91 oh god! I would have gone absolutely mental! Mine is at 2:10 am and pm so I just stayed awake so I didn't get woken up haha

OctoberGirl91 · 18/06/2019 12:16

Aww really I can't seem to get my fasting blood sugar levels down either 😥 I've got a scan this afternoon see what they say.

Oh really, gosh that's a quick turn around! Hope everything goes well for you hun, be thinking of you! My daughter was born at 35 +5 and we had no problems so fingers crossed for you @pilchy xxx

wonkylegs · 18/06/2019 12:38

That's what happened to me but I also had polyhydramnios and literally felt like I was going to pop.
I had to phone My friend to sort out picking DS1 up from school!
Enjoy the relative peace and boredom
My sugar levels which were all over the place even with insulin had dropped to normal within an hour of my c-section and DS2 came out absolutely perfect, so was the right thing to do.
Although I was huge and there had been projections that he was huge too he came out at 6.5lbs which although isn't tiny at 37wks was perfectly reasonable.
My waters actually broke as I was getting ready for going down to theatre so he was clearly coming anyway, I was asked if I wanted to try naturally but due to other factors I went ahead with the section.
My waters at 36wks with DS1 so I guess I only cook babies for under 37wks.

pilchy · 18/06/2019 12:50

She's my first so I haven't got a clue about GD or labour haha
I wouldn't worry too much! They'll only do what is best for bubba!

Thank you so much x

OP posts:
pilchy · 18/06/2019 12:53

@wonkylegs oh god sounds eventful but obvious bubba was ready!

Her head isn't engaged yet so still un sure on if it will be induction or section. Been waiting since 8am for doctor to come round but still nothing!

OctoberGirl91 · 18/06/2019 13:00

How high have your sugars been @pilchy ?

Let's hope they don't keep you any longer. I've gotta have a section this time but I've also got placenta previa completely covering cervix so just one thing after another for me.

Hope it's straight forward for you 🤞🏻xx

pilchy · 18/06/2019 13:11

@OctoberGirl91 I think my highest has only been 9.5 so not majorly bad but a few of my fasting ones have been as high as 8 aswell.
My stomach is so tight feel like she's going to kick her self out the front of it!

Fingers crossed for both of us!

OP posts:
OctoberGirl91 · 18/06/2019 13:28

Oh really that has been same as mine then 🙈 dreading my appointment now.

Good luck for you 🤞🏻🤞🏻x

OctoberGirl91 · 18/06/2019 20:35

Any news @pilchy ?xx

pilchy · 18/06/2019 23:19

@OctoberGirl91 well the ward is under staffed so now I've been moved into a shared room on a different wardConfused
They're now saying they're doing nothing tonight but will decide what to do in the morning.
My last steroid is at 2:25am so I'm going to have to wait in hospital until whenever they can be bothered to tell me what's happening!

How did your scan go? x

OP posts:
Rkay2 · 18/06/2019 23:28

@pilchy you’ll be fine!

I went in for a follow up scan at 34 weeks and they kept me in. 48 hours for 2 lots of steroids but mine were not in my bum!

I opted for the csection as baby was measuring small, and the threshold to convert to a section with Induction was lower. I didn’t not want to stress baby our or myself! Also my body was nowhere near ready for birth.

I had GD, was on metformin for fasting sugars and two types of insulin. One type before bed and one after dinner.

My son did amazingly and sometimes I can’t believe how lucky I was and if I hadn’t gone in for the scan for reduced movements what could have been.
He is also a wonderful cheeky fiery 16 month old!

They also kept me in longer to check baby blood sugars and because he was struggling to maintain his body temperature.

Good luck to you x hospital stays are not the most relaxing!

OctoberGirl91 · 19/06/2019 06:28

Aww fingers crossed they get things moving for you today 🤞🏻least you've had your last dose of steroids they are awful things. Hope you have a straight forward delivery, make sure you update us when baby is born 💗

Scan has shown his now a footling breech similar to previous DD so he's putting feet down which is more a problem as I have complete placenta previa covering my cervix but he's measuring a good size and fluid level is increasing so they keeping an eye on that. Had to have my metformin increased to 5 tablets a day because of my fasting blood so go back in two weeks for another scan and review to see what happens xx

pilchy · 19/06/2019 22:58

@OctoberGirl91 atleast bubby is good size!

So they have now decided it will be a section, giving us more info in the morning xx

OP posts:
OctoberGirl91 · 23/06/2019 13:21

How you got on @pilchy hoping you've got a beautiful baby by now 💗

pilchy · 23/06/2019 15:47

@OctoberGirl91 unfortunately not here yet! They sent us home after 4 days! I have a Section booked in for Thursday!

OP posts:
Sessy19 · 23/06/2019 16:12

@Sleepycat91 That’s actually assault. I qualified and registered nurse would not have injected you without your verbal and immediate consent.

OctoberGirl91 · 23/06/2019 16:34

Aww good luck for Thursday hope it all goes to plan. Let us know how you get on @pilchy xx

Sleepycat91 · 23/06/2019 18:57

She came in early hours, i have a recollection of her saying something and i fell back asleep again and woke up when she jabbed me. I ended up with ptsd from that hospital that was only tip of the ice burg, they left me with damage to my back aswell after they missed an epidural 7 times. Hence why ive outright refused it for my 2nd and even local midwives wont work there

Bingoa · 23/06/2019 19:03

Not exactly the same but I had steroids and little one was safe and sound at 37 weeks.

OctoberGirl91 · 26/06/2019 21:45

Good luck tomorrow @pilchy hope it all goes well. Let us know once your bundle has arrived safely and if it all went to plan xxx
