UTI or Kidney infection

Was looking for some advice as I had what seemed like a UTI from Wednesday but by Friday I was fine. Then Friday night came and I started to get terrible throbbing in both my kidney was sweating and just couldn’t sleep. I then was tired as soon as I woke up and went back to bed by 09:30. By 13:00 I was violently shivering and then I started being sick... I felt a bit better after I was sick. Then when I got in bed it started again so at 5am I called 111 and went to medocc.

They tested my urine and said I was very dry and there was a lot of blood in it and I need to drink more water. I told them I had drunk nearly 2 litres since about midnight as I’m very dehydrated and have a terrible headache.
She then asked if I have a temperature and I said I’ve been going hot and cold but I’m not sure as I couldn’t find my thermometer. She didn’t check my temp.

So she said she was give antibiotics for a UTI and said off my sample and I would need to check with my GP for my results and then we will know if I’m on the right antibiotics.

Now I’m not usually a worrier but this pregnancy I have had a lot of UTI’s and pre pregnancy I had a kidney infection.

Now to me this seems way too severe to be a UTI and I know how dangerous kidney infections are when pregnant.

Has anyone had a UTI of this severity before or should I be asking for another appointment as I’m quite worried.
I’ve been sick again today and slept most of the day, I can hardly lift my head off the pillow and it’s very painful to move with the kidney pain.

Yes, I've been in this situation myself. When I was pregnant with my son I genuinely had it from 12 weeks to 37 weeks. Lots of antibiotics, pain relief and hospital stays unfortunately. Baby was absolutely fine but I took a battering personally. Second pregnancy now and on antibiotics yet again for the same thing though not as serious this time. Sorry to hear its so bad. I know how you feel and it's just awful

KingaRoo · 17/06/2019 21:58

Are you feeling any better yet?

Malley8 · 17/06/2019 22:53

@MegaMonsterMunch oh no that must have been horrible for you. I have had UTIs from about 8 weeks but they have been mostly mild and nothing like this, so I can’t imagine having it for that long I would be a wreck. Glad the baby was fine as i am worried about that and I hope this pregnancy isn’t quite as rough.

@KingaRoo no still unwellSad I text my midwife this morning but haven’t heard anything back yet. The doctors will have my results from urine in 2 days so they may switch my antibiotics if these arent the best ones for me. I’ve not been eating but I’ve managed to keep a complan shake down for 2 hours now so I think they may be the way to go until this clears so atleast I’m getting something now 🤞🏻

I'd go straight to the hospital. Please don't wait two days for the results.
Kidney infections can get very bad very quickly and it sounds like yours is already a bad one.

Get to hospital ASAP

FairyDust92 · 17/06/2019 23:43

My sister was hospitalised with a really bad UTI infection. Agree with previous poster you need to get yourself to the hospital ASAP.
I've had 2 kidney infections in the past but never sick with them just terrible pain. Go and get yourself checked out x

@mrsmummy90
I did end up going back yesterday as when I found my thermometer my temp was 39.18 so I phoned 111 and they sent me back but I saw a different doctor and she said the same thing that they need to wait for my urine culture results.

I do feel like they have been useless but I’m not sure what else I can do. Medocc in my hospital is part of a&e so they will just send me back round and I’m guessing tell me the same thing. That’s why I thought to try my midwife as I thought she maybe more helpful with my concerns for the baby but she hasn’t responded and I sent her the message at 8am. I know she is working today as I have an appointment with her Thursday anyway so saw her diary for the week.

It’s been very frustrating overall and I’m guessing it’s because I’m 17 weeks, the doctor said I could go in for a scan if I start bleeding but that was as helpful as it got Angry

That's awful! I can't believe they're being so careless! You could do a urine sample in the hospital and they'd have the right antibiotics in a few hours. No idea why they're making you wait days!

Personally I'd go back and be very vocal about needing help NOW. Please keep us updated on how you are! Hope you get better ASAP xx
