Ketones and blood in urine

[PG2018]

I am twelve weeks pregnant tomorrow I am currently sat in out of hours waiting to see a Dr because I started bleeding earlier today. The nurse has just done a urine test and told me there is blood and ketones in my urine. She didn't really explainwhat this ment other than asking if I was eating and if I eat meat, the answer to both was yet. I'm sat here feeling panicked, I was just wondering what people's experience of this was?

Do you have morning sickness and not eat a lot? Or are you trying to lose - control weight and limit your sugar and carbs?
People on the paleo diet, high meat, high protein, or people who eat a very low calories, low sugar diet, or high fat diet, go into ketones, when body breaks down fat for energy.

Or do you have family history of diabetes? there is a condition called gestational diabetes, but it really happen way later than 12 weeks

Thanks for your reply. No family history of diabetes, haven't had morning sickness ( other than feeling a bit sick) and have been eating really well quantity and variety wise.

Have you been seen? how are you feeling?

@PG2018 I hope you got sorted. I had severe nausea so was barely eating or drinking and had ketones present. I ending up having to go to hospital for an IV drip and that seemed to get rid of them.

Thanks for asking @LiliesAndChocolate. The dr didn't seem to think the 2 were connected . They seemed to put the ketones down to dehydration which doesn't make sense really and that the bleeding happens to lots of people in early pregnancy. I was told to go back if the bleeding worsened or I was in pain or if I was vomiting . So really it's a matter of me waiting until my scan on Wednesday.

@PG2018 Did you have the scan? Is everything alright?

I did and all is well, no ketones today either . Baby is due 30/12/19

That is a great news. Try to hold the baby for 24 more hours and it will be born with fireworks and the world cheering!
