Hi Everyone,

I've had a bit of a scare yesterday and was just wondering about your experiences, at my midwife appointment there were traces of protein in my urine and my blood pressure was on the cusp of needing a hospital visit.
As my hands have swollen due to carpal tunnel and my feet and ankle have been swollen for a few weeks now she said I might be at risk of pre-eclampsia, I'm trying to focus on the might part but I am absolutely terrified! I have another appointment with her next week to check my urine and BP again but I want to stay calm!

Has anyone had these symptoms and been OK? its my first baby, I'm 35 weeks, not over weight, I dont over eat, but I am stressed to hell with work and my carpal tunnel which is making every single thing I do absolute agony

any help or advice would be welcome! x

Sorry to hear you're having a difficult time. I think if the midwife was overly concerned, she would be monitoring you daily, not weekly, so that is a positive.
Rest as much as you can.
As for work, make a handover list now, you can update it weekly if you are still there, but if you need to go off early, you are prepared.
Don't feel under pressure to finish everything, it's unrealistic.
Good luck 💚

I had pre-eclampsia which started at about 35 weeks. I went to my GP for a blood pressure check as I didn't feel right. Also had protein in urine so was referred to hospital for monitoring and subsequently released.

Same thing again at 36 weeks picked up upon during routine midwife appointment.

Same thing again at 38 weeks and this time pre-eclampsia was confirmed and I was then induced.

If you're at all worried then see your midwife/GP for a BP and urine check at any time.

My symptoms included:-

Extreme swelling of hands, feet, legs etc. I could barely bend my legs because they were so swollen.
Headaches that paracetamol wouldn't touch.
Occasional floating spots in vision - particularly if I coughed.
I was putting on several lb a day in water weight - whatever I was drinking was ending up being stored and I was barely weeing.

I'd just say make sure get checked out if you're worried at all. Consider finishing work a bit earlier if stressful - I wish I did!!

I delevoped pre clamsia and HELLP. My blood pressure was OK at the midwife appointment before hand. My feet and legs were swollen and I was being sick almost daily (I didn't have any morning sickness early on). She thought just two symptoms that can happen in later pregnancy. They both got worse so I rang the labour ward a few days later late night and they called me in and they delivered DS the next day at 36 weeks. Thankfully he only had very minor issues and is doing fantastic now!

Go with your instincts x
