Bleeding in early pregnancy

I’m 6 weeks 5 days along today and have been bleeding since last night. It’s very light, more like the tissue comes away pinkish red every time I wipe after a pee, haven’t gotten close to filling a pad or anything.

I had another scan today and the foetus seems fine, saw the heartbeat, but they couldn’t explain the source of the bleeding. Asked me to just wait and watch and it’s looking like it’s going to be a loooong weekend.

Since starting this post a few hours ago I’ve had one instance of darker red discharge mixed in with a lot of white - very stringy but no clots.

Since the advice is A & E if there is cramping and clots and sit tight otherwise I’m asking for others experiences on here. Anyone had similar? Positive outcomes?

Yeah I had bleeding at four weeks and eleven weeks so far. Both times it was bright red blood, not much though. First time was the tiniest bit, maybe a dab, then it stopped. Second time it lasted about ten mins and every time I put a finger inside myself (I was checking where the blood came from) it’d come out bloody, but it stopped very quickly too. Both of them happened after straining for a bowel movement.

Scared the shit outta me but baby was fine and I’ve had healthy scans since. NHS weren’t much use, only approached them the second time. Couldn’t get through to the early pregnancy unit the entire day despite them allegedly being open and when I finally went to hospital they said as it had stopped that it wasn’t an emergency, they couldn’t tell me what caused it and didn’t examine or scan me. I think their approach is very ‘we can’t do anything to prevent a miscarriage that’s in process anyway so don’t bother us unless it’s clots/filling a pad/you’re in pain’. I totally get it and understand they can’t see every pregnant woman with a bleed but it scared me to my core and I ended up booking a private scan the next day to check what was going on in there as I couldn’t settle knowing I’d bled when I’m high risk of miscarriage due to endometriosis and consultant led.

But yeah, your bleed doesn’t sound concerning, though I can see why you’d be worried as it’s horrible when you see blood during pregnancy.

Thanks Emerald. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy.

I’m more concerned because it hasn’t stopped. Been going on since last night and it’s like a very very mild period.

Nothing to do but wait and watch.

(And apparently have a big stupid unnecessary fight with DH because we’re both on edge).

Bumping for traffic because it still hasn’t stopped 24 h after it started. Getting very worried about what feels inevitable :(

I can only tell you of my own experiences:

Pregnancy 1: no bleeding MMC 11 weeks
Pregnancy 2: no bleeding- healthy baby born
Pregnancy 3: early bleeding (brown blood) for about 4 days -healthy baby born
Pregnancy 4: bleeding brown blood at exactly 6 weeks, miscarried on Monday (bleeding progressed to red on Saturday)

Very best of luck. As you can see from mine, it was a mixed bag!

Hi OP. I had bleeding st 7 weeks after sex, it was pink to begin and then bright red with clots and back ache but no cramps. I went to early pregnancy unit and they checked my cervix and booked me an early scan and basically told my to get on with it but eat well and rest. I did what they said. Two days later I had a spontaneous bleed and it was pretty heavy and bright red, clots and back ache again. I had early scan and everything was fine, there was a small bleed next to the sac even though I felt like I had lost a lot of blood. Went back at twelve weeks and found out I was expecting identical twins and one had been hiding behind the other. So it might not be all doom and gloom all though I know how you feel completely. It is horrible and an awful thing to go through especially so early in a pregnancy when nothing can really be done. All I can say is take relief in the fact you saw a foetus and a heartbeat. A heartbeat is a reassuring sign. They said to me that there was no reason for the bleed, I'm young (21) and healthy and they didn't know what caused the bleed it just happens sometimes. Keep an eye on the bleeding and contact your EPU if it gets heavier or the cramps get more painful. I wish you all the best x

An evening of stomach cramps at 8/9 weeks followed by one big bleed, then nothing more. But it was a big red bleed.

Subchronic haematoma apparently. Nearly 2 year old now, but I was pretty sure it was game over.

Nothing is over til a dr tells you, huge bleeds can be normal.

I've had constant bleeding since six weeks (I'm ten weeks today).

How heavy it is varies but it's pretty much everyday I'll wipe and have stringy brown blood, sometimes there are clots. I've had two scans so far (6 and 8 weeks) and all was fine, got another scan this morning so I'm hoping it's still all ok.

Bleeding is really unnerving but it's a good sign you had a positive scan so as long as it doesn't get painful or too heavy then try and ignore it. Do you have a follow up scan booked in?

Bisquick · 08/06/2019 07:35

Hope all is well Kinsters. Your post gave me hope.

I have a follow up scan booked in a week and a half. Might have another one next week if bleeding continues - need to speak to consultant (high risk pregnancy anyway because of previous loss so I’m not midwife led).

Thank you, all was well at the scan today. My Dr said for some women bleeding is normal and as long as the scan shows all is well then she's happy with that.

I really hope everything turns out ok for you, especially after a previous loss. It's impossible not to worry though! x

Now having really mild heaviness and cramps and slightly more bleeding. Right now it still feels like a mild period or day 1 of a period. Keeping busy with my toddler, and trying to just ignore it and hope it goes away. Nothing yet to warrant an A&E visit but just feeling very anxious and pessimistic now. :(

@Bisquick I'm sorry you are having to experience the stress of bleeding. I have my fingers and toes crossed that things are ok. I've seen lots of posts on here where ladies say they have bleed and some for quite some time and the pregnancy continues to be successful. If you have any worries then.m just call your EPU. When is your next scan?

JBCG · 08/06/2019 18:58

I had bleeding on and off from about 4 weeks til 9 weeks. Sometimes the blood was brown and sometimes much pinker/redder. It never got particularly heavy (wouldn't fill a pad etc) but definitely scary nonetheless! I ask had some mild cramping during the first trimester. I'm now 37+2 so while I know it is terrifying, try not to worry too much!

Bisquick · 08/06/2019 19:10

Oh that’s good to know @JBCG (I mean not that you had that of course but comforting that you did and all was still okay! Good luck with the delivery!!)

Thanks @Newbie21 - I don’t think EPU will be able to do anything right now. Had a scan Friday afternoon, will call Monday morning to see if I can have another scan sometime next week. My next scheduled scan is at 8+2, a week and a bit from now.
