Internal ultrasound - question

I was just wondering if I need a full or empty bladder for a transvaginal scan?

I'm currently 11+1 and had a slight need on Sunday. I rang the hospital who said to go down. When we got there, there were no medical staff available to carry out a scan. The nurse took a urine sample and booked me in for a transvaginal scan tomorrow morning. (I'm still waiting for me 12 week scan appointment letter)

I know for a normal ultrasound you need a full bladder, just not sure for the internal and I forgot to ask the nurse on Sunday.

Usually empty for a tv scan. However at 11weeks they should be able to do an abdo. So I would have a full bladder and then empty it there if they need you too.

Yes, I've had a lot of scans with this pregnancy and they started being external/abdominal scans at about 8 weeks. No need to do a TV scan at 11 weeks I wouldn't have thought. Best to do as pp says - go with a full bladder and you can always have a wee if not needed.

go with a full bladder for abdo scan.

always empty bladder for internal.

Thanks for your replies Smile

The nurse definitely said it would be a TV scan, but I think you're right, I'll go with a full bladder and check when I arrive whether I need to pee or not!
