Comments about how "big" I am

So I'm pretty small build, 5ft exactly, 22 weeks pregnant and people keep commenting "oh I thought you were further along than that" and "my friend is nearly due and is the same size as you" couldn't wait to get a bump, but now I feel like people are passing judgement on my size and it's really frustrating. Anyone been here and can offer words of advice or witty comebacks? Haha

I’m on the other extreme of your not showing at all and it’s such a tiny bump. I am showing but my clothing hides it pretty well unless I wear something tight. I think people just feel the urge to say something whether it’s big, small, high or low lying. Same as people apparently get the urge to touch. That’s the bit I’m really dreading! Just bizarre how people feel they need to pass any comment or advice all of a sudden.

RandomMess · 02/06/2019 19:48

I used to retort "I'm only 5' of course it looks big"

I then produced a 10lb 6oz baby with loads of fluid and whipping placenta so all the questions of "is it twins?" Weren't so far off after all...

missrose0110 · 02/06/2019 19:52

@EnjoyItAll actually, I've been wearing floaty tops for weeks and just started wearing maxi dresses and skirts so maybe my clothing does make it more obvious, come to think of it. Yes, people touching, it's the weirdest thing, I know it all comes from a nice place, but it's so strange!! Women at the office I've spoken to once suddenly feel the need to rub my belly like I'm a lucky Buddha haha!

@RandomMess oh wow, a few people have asked me "is it twins" maybe I'm growing a 10lb little one 🙊

People just can’t keep their opinions to themselves. I got so fed up with “where’s your bump are you sure you’re pregnant” and “hmm I’d be worried about that if I were you”. Best response was to smile sarcastically and say I wasn’t asking for your input. Soon shuts people up!

PowerslidePanda · 02/06/2019 20:33

No advice, but sympathy! I'm 5"1 and it actually is twins this time - I'm only 15 weeks and already look 5 months - goodness knows what kind of comments I'm going to get in the later stages!

lljkk · 02/06/2019 20:34

I can say things about admiring magnificent bumps. Which I do admire.
I deemed it harmless chitchat when people said that I carried small.
If they meant it as some kind of judgement I didn't have the energy to care.

GiraffeMomma · 02/06/2019 20:46

@missrose0110 I am 5'9" and a size 14 and I'm 24 weeks pregnant..... also getting comments on the size of my bump and the fact people think I'm further along, I've come to the conclusion that people in general don't know what they're talking about but this doesn't stop them from talking about it 😂

Also very concerned at the size of the baby I'm going to be pushing out 🙈

EnjoyItAll · 02/06/2019 20:52

@missrose0110 I definatly think clothing has a lot to do with people's comments. I've been lucky on the touching front so far as it's only mil who gave me a little stroke haha. I would feel so awkward touching someone else's belly. especially a work colleagues!

ohdearymemumof3 · 02/06/2019 21:25

I am a size 14 and still hold a lot of baby fat in my belly since having my 3yr old and 15 month old, never could lose it, and ever since i have been so insecure about my weight, i am now 11 weeks pregnant and everyones sayin how big my "bump" is already, and i must be having twins.. i find it so insulting because i dont feel like my bellys got any bigger, it looked like this before i fell pregnant so there comments are just rude :/..

ChrisPrattsFace · 02/06/2019 22:37

I’m a 12-14 and 5’7 (and three quarters!) and since about 21 weeks have been told i look ‘ready to drop’ ..... it makes me wonder what an absolute effing whale monster I’ll look like in the next 12/15 weeks!

anonforthespies43267 · 02/06/2019 22:46

In the last week I’ve had ‘oh my god you’re huge’ about 6 times. I’m 36 weeks now and still in my size 10 maternity clothes and yes I have a big bump, there’s almost a full term baby in there!
I usually just say ‘so are you’ then laugh which usually shuts them up x

Slicedpineapple · 02/06/2019 22:54

I used to make a joke back, along with a smile and a laugh. Mean but people learnt to wind it in a bit.

My favourite bump comment was 'look at the size of your bump, I can't believe it, it's huge!' when I was 36 weeks pregnant about to finish for maternity leave. Of course, a large bump is a shock at such a point.

Maddis136 · 03/06/2019 08:08

Same boat OP. I do wonder at 37 weeks what size people think I should be when they comment. There’s a fully grown baby in there. Ladies with a small space between our ribs and pelvis carry big because there’s just no other room. We have organs to carry too!

If it makes you feel better I’ve been comparing this bump with my first. In my first pregnancy everyone said “aren’t you neat” etc and this time “wow you’re huge”. The bumps are exactly the same size so it’s clearly nonsense. People just want to comment.

I usually ignore but sometimes I just call them out on it and say “oh really? I don’t think I am. I feel quite good about my size”. And they soon realise they’ve been inconsiderate.

I did tell my Dad “yes I’m pregnant what’s your excuse?” But I was in a very bad mood that day!

Balooo123 · 08/06/2019 10:42

@missrose0110 😂 lucky Buddha thing I was just about to say! People rub my belly like I'm lucky lol. I get comments this is my 2nd I'm 27weeks and the amount of people who feel the need to comment on how big I am 🙄 a girl at work is due the day before me and she is no where near as big as me be glad when I'm out of there xx

Refilona · 08/06/2019 12:04

With me it’s the opposite, and it’s equally as annoying. Makes you think something is wrong. Ignore them!

IcelandicYoghurt · 08/06/2019 12:06

"You know how before I was pregnant it would have been totally inappropriate for you to comment on my body size or shape? .. That hasn't changed"

jputthekettleon · 08/06/2019 12:23

It is quite annoying. Second baby here - quite a few comments about my massive bump (37 weeks). Bump actually small for size at midwife app yesterday so have to go for a scan this week. Last baby the bump was measuring large - can't win! I don't really put any stock in the bump measurements but has made me laugh that my 'massive' bump is measuring small ...

lovebeingmum9 · 08/06/2019 13:43

I would take it with a pinch of salt as I don't think people really think there being offensive.....I'm also exactly 5ft and pregnant with my 4th this time but previously I've had both ends of the spectrum....people saying 'wow your tiny' and 'wow you look ready to pop' etc mostly I just found it all amusing! lol
