First ever pregnancy but can’t work out how far gone I am!? Please help

Hello all, I am delighted with the news of my first pregnancy and am eager to do everything right! As soon as I found out, I rang the dr to make an appointment however the woman on the phone asked me how far along I am to which I replied I have no idea. She said they wouldn’t give me an appointment until 8 weeks which is totally fine however I can’t work out how far along I am.

I took a clear blue test which said 3+ weeks which is great, however because I had the contraceptive implant and have always suffered with an irregular cycle, I have no idea how to work this out or how to get an appointment to find out. It’s been so long since I’ve had a period that I can’t use that as an indicator (so long that I can’t remember when my last one was) My implant was removed on the 4th of April so in theory I could be as far along as 7 weeks!

If anyone has any insight, please share. I will take any advice right now. Thank you in advance for any replies 💕

When was your last period? That the first day of your pregnancy

katmarie · 02/06/2019 19:37

To be honest I would call the doctor back and advise them that you don't know when your last period was and ask them to get you booked in on that basis. They will have experienced this before, don't worry :)

You should find out at your dating scan which usually takes places up to 14weeks. You might be referred quickly from your booking appointment to find out. Did you tell the gp surgery that the clear blue said 3+ and that you could be as far as 7 weeks?

Joopy · 02/06/2019 19:41

Sorry didn't read it all! I would assume that you are about 5 weeks (you have to add 2 weeks on to the CB result) explain to your GP you don't know exactly, I had a scan at 10 weeks and they were able to accurately date the pregnancy.

HeartContainer · 02/06/2019 19:42

Can you afford a private dating scan?

HeartContainer · 02/06/2019 19:43

Joop the clear blue only goes up to 3 weeks +

So in theory you could be 14 weeks and get a 3+ result

HJWT · 02/06/2019 19:47

Wouldn't trust the clear blue my friend got a 3+ result and should of been 1-2, tell your midwife/doctor you don't know how far along you are or pay for a private scan any decent place will make you pay once and bring you back if they cant see anything.

Bambamber · 02/06/2019 19:59

I would personally treat the day you had your implant removed as the first day of your cycle, which would make you over 8 weeks I think. I wouldn't have my heart set on that being accurate though, but you could explain more when you have your appointment. Although if you could afford a dating scan that would be your best option

Mamacorn · 02/06/2019 21:09

Hey everyone, thank you so much for your help! When I called, I hadn’t done the clear blue yet so I had no clue how far along nor had I worked out I could be up to 7/8 weeks.

I’ve been having pregnancy symptoms for the past 3 weeks so I think I may be around 4-5 weeks gone. I can not afford private at the current moment but once I get paid I should have the money spare if my gp is unhelpful.

I will try to call them in the morning and see if they can help me a little more. Sorry about all the rambling I’m just so nervous/excited and want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to help little one! :)

Congrats! They will estimate your due date based on your baby's measurements at your 12 week scan and are usually pretty accurate. You could book a private /early scan in the mean time as again they will measure for due date

babynumber2onboard · 03/06/2019 07:15

Can you self-refer to your local maternity department? In some areas you can! Congratulations xxx

Heyha · 03/06/2019 07:24

I'd tell them that you have now done a clear blue and you believe you're 6 weeks pregnant, maybe 7 (as that's your outside limit based on stopping contraception). They'll get you booked in fairly soon for your initial appointment which will trigger booking your scan, and then if you are a week or two out you'll find out at your dating (12 week) scan, job done. There are time limits on certain tests done at that so better to have it a little early than to accidentally leave it a little late and we're only talking a two week or so window of uncertainty.

BikeRunSki · 03/06/2019 07:26

I’d err on the side of “more pregnant” than “less pregnant”’, donthat you get a dating scan sooner rather than later, and don’t miss the opportunity for the various tests that need to be carried out at particular times, should you choose to have them.

64632K · 03/06/2019 07:29

Can you get a bHcG test done, they give an estimate of how many weeks

PrayingandHoping · 03/06/2019 08:31

@Mamacorn if you've been having symptoms for around 3 weeks you could well be 7/8 weeks pregnant as you don't get pregnancy symptoms until around 4/5 weeks when hcg levels would have been high enough for a positive test....

Mamacorn · 03/06/2019 20:14

Hey everyone just thought I would update you if you’re interested. I rang the drs back and was lucky enough to speak to the same lady so she remembered how confused I was before! I told her I could be as far along as 8 weeks and she booked me in for the nearest appointment which is the 18th this month!

I’m so excited to learn more about the process and my little one. Thanks again for all the advice, you’ve helped calm me down and will definitely be using this site more if I have any questions Smile
