Miscarriage really light?

Hi everyone,

I had some spotting and bleeding at 9wks, went to EPU, ultrasound showed only a 6wk embryo with no heartbeat. Apparently when it’s less than 4mm they have to give it “the benefit of the doubt” by protocol, even though the midwife basically said I’ll have a miscarriage.

My question is that has anybody else had a miscarriage that was really light? I’ve had nothing in the way of “heavy” bleeding or pain yet, just the same brownish red blood (sorry if TMI) on and off with very mild cramps. I’m just curious as from what I’ve been reading I was expecting a bloodbath... has anybody else had a really light miscarriage? Or am I just going through the calm before the storm, as it were? Thanks so much in advance :)

(I’m due another scan on Monday to confirm no growth/see if any tissue left)

Calm before the storm in my experience, sorry 💐I've had 4 MC at the 9-10 week stage, though bsby didn't grow much beyond 6-7 weeks and they all involved a period of several hours of cramps and heavy bleeding, followed by days of bleeding like a heavy period. If nothing much has happened at your next scan they will probably offer you medical or surgical management. I'm so sorry, it is a really shitty thing to go through.

Aw thanks so much for replying Patchworksack! I’m so sorry to hear about your losses :( I just wasn’t sure, it’s been going on for over a week already :-/ I never ever wear pads because I hate them, so that’s actually worse than the mild cramps!

Monday seems so long away! Sad

Every miscarriage is different so it really won’t help you in terms of gaging whether yours is. It just depends on the type of miscarriage - ectopics often come with spotting and bleeding. MMC you might not get any bleeding. Whereas Molar pregnancies often start with just spotting. You often only start bleeding heavily when you are passing the tissue.

3 weeks out at 9 weeks isn’t necessarily bad. It could be that your dates were slightly wrong and the measurements were a bit off. I know it’s shit, and I won’t tell you to have hope, but do make sure you get (insist if you have to) as many scans as possible (especially if the sac seems to be growing) before you agree to any miscarriage management option. NHS equipment isn’t the best and there have been stories of ultrasound equipment incorrectly labelling a developing embryo as a miscarriage.

Thanks Teddybear that’s really good advice :). I hadn’t even thought it could potentially be a mis-date but I’ll make sure to ask her on Monday. I kind of just want it over now so I can get on with sorting out my cycle and thinking about trying again :)

@F1uff my miscarriage wasn't anything like I expected no bloodbath hardly any pain. I was only bleeding when I went to the toilet (sorry TMI) hardly anything on a pad. I barely had pain as well.

Thinking of you x

Aw thanks MrsH :) it seems (like everything bloody else in the first trimester) it’s a case of “wait and see”! More crosswords to distract my brain!
