Hair dye during pregnancy

I am 5 weeks pregnant, 35 years old, have lots of gray hair. I tried to dye the gray parts with Naturtint Reflex free from all nasty chemicals (from Holland and Barrett) but it delivered no result whatsoever. I have dark brown hair so it is not possible to conceal the gray parts and the hair grows so quickly that I was normally dyeing it every 3 weeks.
Has anyone used henna? Did it work?
Could anyone recommend any other hair dye that is considered safe to use during pregnancy?
Many thanks in advance.

I'm a qualified level three hairdresser and colourist and I've never ever had any one have any problems dying their hair during pregnancy. I've had my roots regularly done throughout all of my pregnancies.

Some opinions will say not to dye hair whilst pregnant but in all my training I've never ever been told it should not be done.

It's your judgement though x

Never been told to avoid hair dye during pregnancy but if you're concerned then just go for semi permenant.
Only avoid bleach and make sure you're in a well ventilated room Smile

NHS says its ok but that you may want to wait until after the first trimester. Doesn't actually say you need to wait though

You can most certainly use hair dye whilst pregnant. I dyed my hair twice in both my pregnancies. All my friends have coloured hair and kept up with their roots throughout their pregnancies too. Please don't worry.

I've been googling this so much recently, my roots are awful but I have bleached hair. I'm still non the wiser.

I dyed my hair multiple times... I think in the past dyes had more dangerous ingredients but they are fine to use now

tisonlymeagain · 31/05/2019 17:02

There's no real evidence not to and everything I've said would you'd have to be using massive amounts, like huge, for there to be any slight risk. I shall be colouring as normal!

The main reason is that some people's hair can act differently in pregnancy due to hormones etc so hair that may usually lift 3 shades well with a certain vol peroxide may not lift as well if done during pregnancy...however, even with bleach I've never known anyone to have any problems at all.

Assuming you have a new patch test done that is, as again the scalp may be more sensitive in pregnancy

I've switched to Khadi Henna now while pregnant. Check it out, it's brilliant !

I asked this too - all fine, my hairdresser said it's more about how pregnancy can affect how your hair takes to the dye and that bleach was more unpredictable than dyeing without.

Sessy19 · 01/06/2019 07:46

I bleach to the scalp, I did a patch test before application (8-9wkly) to check sensitivity.

I had a consultant appointment and he and three senior midwives said that they saw no problem with hair dyes. The chemicals used in hair dyes in industrial strengths would be harmful but in most cases, dyes have such low concentration that they don’t cross the placenta.

Lie you, I didn’t want to take the risk during pregnancy and have lots of grey, dye resistant hair. I used this www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk/natural-hair-colour/
Which I found covered my grey well.

I dyed my hair after 5months, just used a permanent dye from supermarket.
