I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant, Last night boyfriend was resting his head on my belly and swears he could hear baby's heartbeat..just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or was his imagination running wild? Smile

No - he heard your heart beat. Or his own pulse whooshing in his ear. But not the baby's heart beat.

Was he holding a Doppler at the time? If not, he didn’t hear the baby’s heartbeat

He probably heard your heartbeat

You need a Doppler and to know what you're listening for, as far as I'm aware you can't hear a baby's tiny heartbeat through a belly. Like PP said it's probably your heartbeat or his. Your baby's will be about 150bpm give or take. My midwife let me record it for DH when he couldn't make my appointment.

Well you can definitely hear a baby's hb with the bit from the middle of the loo roll. So possibly you could hear without even that if you just happen to be in the right spot and have good hearing. But more likely he heard the placenta swooshing.

OH swore up and down one night that he could hear the baby crying and is she ok...while I was still pregnant.

Funnily enough he rarely heard her cries in the middle of the night once she was born.Grin

That makes sense, I saw a locum for the last GP appointment. He was elderly and lovely and should have been in a village practice looking after third generations of the same families! But he couldn't find the Doppler and it was so busy and obviously understaffed he couldn't find anybody else to find it either. Whipped out a pinard stethescope from his bag - "luckily I'm one of few doctors it would seem who still carries one of these!".
I didn't get to hear of course, but I thought it was lovely he was so old school!

I didn't think this was possible - however, I read it online somewhere and asked my midwife.. She told me it is in fact possible! but quite unusual and depends on baby's position.
I'm not sure if it would be possible to hear it as early as 23 weeks though HmmSmile
