Higher dose folic acid because of age?

I've just picked up info from my GP to self-refer to the midwife care. On the letter it says if you are over 40 you should see the GP for a higher dose of folic acid.

This is the first time I have ever seen this - I am 40 very soon. Does anyone have experience of this/been adviced this?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes I think that’s right. It’s because if you’re over 40 and using your own eggs there’s a higher risk of neural tube defects and preclamsia (prevention of both has been related to folic acid).

My area also asks women over 40 to take aspirin as standard.

Okay, I'd better make an appointment then!

Thanks - appointment made for tomorrow. I'm guessing as I got this letter from my GP practice that they won't be surprised by me asking the question!
