Can you have to much folic acid? I've been taking pregnacare and a extra dose of folic acid and now worrying I've been taking to much?

I've had 2 misscarriages and a ectopic so just trying to give my body everything it needs in hope my next pregnancy is successful

I spoke to my pharmacist about this as I was taking the same as you. He said to just take the extra folic and vitamin D but wasn’t concerned about it being an issue. Might be worth cutting back until you can check with your midwife/doctor?

I wondered the same as I’m on the extra dose and have been since November (mc December and stayed on while ttc as per doc advice). According to my doc I should take higher dose until 12 weeks but it’s fine to keep taking for longer

Oh I missed that - midwife said not to bother with pregnancies, just folic acid and vitamin D

😮 Pregnacare not pregnancies!!! Autocorrect fail!

if your taking pregnacare I wouldn't bother with the extra dose unless recommended for you. you can get folic acid from green leafy vegetables so top up through your diet instead Smile

My BMI is borderline 29/30. My midwife prescribed the higher dose of folic acid. I said to her, shall I take this alongside my Pregnacare tablet? She said no. (I also take a separate vitamin D tablet at her request).

I would definitely ask a pharmacist, midwife or doctor what the consequences of taking a double dose might be. But I would relax because the nhs website for pregnant ladies says this:

"If you're taking folic acid supplements, it's important not to take too much, as this could be harmful.

Taking 1mg or less a day of folic acid supplements is unlikely to cause any harm."

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-b/

So if you're taking two doses, say for example, the 500micrograms prescribed by a doctor and the 400micrograms in a pregnacare tablet, you should be ok as they add up to 900 micrograms (0.9 grams).

Again though, double check with a healthcare professional x

I wouldn't continue taking both though. Keep on with pregnancare unless the second tablet is a higher dose and has been prescribed. Then take that until week 12 and swap back to pregnacare after x

I took 5mg during pregnancy while the usual dose is 0.4mg.
