5 weeks and very constipated - any laxatives safe?

I'm 5 weeks and very constipated. I was diagnosed with slow transit bowels a few years ago and was on medication to help bowel movements but stopped when trying to conceive as they're not safe in pregnancy. Now I'm really bunged up... what do you guys take to help?

I think Lactulose is ok.

Teddybear45 · 28/05/2019 17:40

Lactulose and fibogel together should help you.

PrayingandHoping · 28/05/2019 18:04

Prune juice on an empty stomach

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/05/2019 18:05

I took Lactulose and fybogel throughout.

elephantmarch · 28/05/2019 18:06

Peppermint tea also helps to get things moving

Passthecherrycoke · 28/05/2019 18:07

Yes lactolose, fybergel and my personal favourite, 2 bowls of all bran and 2 dates per day!

Cosmogirl86 · 28/05/2019 18:24

I am constipated due to iron tablets, and 15ml laculose with dinner each day works really well for me

Estellastar · 28/05/2019 18:24

Fybogel

Add a tablespoon (or 2 if you're really desperate) of ground flaxseed to your porridge in the morning. And drink plenty of water.

What also works for me is rapid consumption of sugar free sweets. Except that they tend to result in a lot of farting, which no one benefits from.

CocoLoco87 · 28/05/2019 18:51

I took movicol

Catarinah · 28/05/2019 18:55

Great thanks everyone, will pop to Boots tomorrow and stock up

Nothing with senna - stimulant laxatives are the ones you should avoid in pregnancy. The others will be ok (lactulose, laxido, movicol etc).

Avoid senna or stimulant laxatives unless advised by a doctor. Pretty much any of the stool softening or bulking agent ones are fine. Lactulose and movicol work in the same way so I would choose which you prefer. Lactulose is a very sweet liquid can be taken straight (only need 15 to 30ml) or mixed with juice or water. Movicol is powder sachets you add to water or other drinks and it has a salty type of taste.

Mamabear12 · 29/05/2019 06:56

I would try eating prunes for a few days and also drinking warm water with lemon first thing in morning on empty stomach. Pay attention to diet as well. Healthier diet means you will go more often.

TakingtheLeap · 29/05/2019 07:33

Trick that worked for me - big glass of prime juice to get things moving, then a small glass a day thereafter to keep them that way.

You can also try inulin mixed in water - it’s derived from chicory root and is really high in fibre so a good daily thing to take. It doesn’t taste of anything - just build it up slowly.

There is also psyllium husk in water, another natural thing and full of fibre - but it has some texture x
