Second hand smoke!!

So we’re currently on holiday in Greece - it’s meant to be a relaxing week away as we lost our first baby in the 2nd trimester and have been very anxious about this one.

However, everyone here smokes! By the pool, on the beach, at dinner - I’m constantly smelling cigarette smoke on the wind - currently in my room as I can’t bear it anymore and now panicking about how this may affect the baby - I’m hoping it will be ok as it’s just for a few days but I know second hand smoke can have an effect on the baby.

Has anyone else experienced this either on holiday or just in general and have any tips or reassurance that their baby was fine? I’m dying to call my midwife but I feel like I’m making a nuisance of myself with her as I seem to be constantly ringing with one worry or another!

Thanks!

I experienced it once as I was visiting my old neighbour and she smoked the whole time that I was there (a few hours). She didnt even open a window and was talking about how 40 years ago everyone kept smoking during pregnancy. I didnt say anything as it was her home but surely if a pregnant friend would visit me I would go outside to smoke!

I think secondhand smoke isnt the end of the world but its obviously not very healthy either!
I think you can try to avoid it in the general open spaces like the pool but I’d be livid if someone elses smoke came into my hotelroom, being pregnant or not. Its simply disgusting and surely I would immediately go downstairs to the reception and demand they solve this. I assume you paid for a smoke free room after all!

Try not to worry Pudge84, smelling smoke on the wind is not going to hurt your baby AT ALL whilst on holiday. Its unpleasant yes, but will do no harm, so stop stressing and go out and enjoy your holiday. x

Thanks for taking the time to reply @Honeybee85 and @BigusBumus - I’ve ventured back out to the pool and it’s smoke free at the moment!

How horrid. You forget how lucky we are here where smoking is named in most public spaces.

We were in Switzerland and everyone smokes. I couldn't walk anywhere in Bern without smoke! I escaped into a shop.

You hardly ever smell people smoking in the streets around here. Not in a way you can't avoid it.

Its quite common in Greece to smoke!
My Greek friend was even told by her OB -GYN that she could keep smoking during pregnancy, though significally less, as stress would do more harm then smoking.

I know, I have a new appreciation for the UK! @Honeybee85 that’s insane being told to smoke in this day and age during pregnancy! Shock thank his for the smoking ban in England!
