Hi all,

Had my first midwife appointment today and she said to take folic acid for the whole pregnancy not just the first 12 weeks. Is this a new thing ? Never had to do this before ?

Thanks

I was told to take throughout. I have medical issues and can't absorb things properly. Also I found out about pregnancy late was about 18 weeks. It won't harm to take more

@Lolly2019 I think it's most important during the early weeks (could be wrong though as I've never had a baby). I just assumed people would take pregnancy vits (which include Folic acid) all throughout pregnancy anyway.

The advice is to take multivitamins throughout pregnancy.

WildFlower2019 · 20/05/2019 20:44

Agree with PPs. You can take it throughout pregnancy in a prenatal vitamin, it won't do any harm. But it's only vital to take in the first 12 weeks - www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant/#folic-acid-before-and-during-pregnancy

Make sure you take a prenatal vitamin not a multivitamin tho - multivitamins include Vitamin A which can be harmful - www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant/#where-to-get-pregnancy-supplements

Yeah this is new my midwife gave me vitamins to last me. Guess areas are different & dont get that. Its vitamin c ,d and folica acid.

TheCatInTheSquare · 20/05/2019 21:16

I started taking it while ttc and will take through my entire pregnancy but this is because of a medication I take.

Did your MW specify any reason for you to take it throughout?

Angelinthenightx · 20/05/2019 21:20

This is a new thing ,my midwife said the same to me.i will ask her next week the reason why we have to take it the whole pregnancy.

Hi,
Can’t remember the exact reason but she said because of recent research shows benefits. Nothing to do with me medically.
Thanks
