Hi there,

Ive been having some light brown discharge for 2 days now. Went for a scan today due to my history of miscarriages and we saw a lovely little 'bean' measuring spot on for dates - 6 weeks and 4 days. Heart beating away! BUT I still cant help but worry... what are my chances?? Has anyone had a similar experience??

no similar experience but i would have thought the fact that the discharge is brown is a good thing. fingers crossed for you

Another vote for OK-ness of brown discharge (as opposed to fresh blood). Fingers crossed for you.

It's really scary isn't it - you just can't help thinking the worst.

I had bleeding throughout my pg with ds - from about 6 weeks, and a couple of instances with dd. Mostly brown blood (which essentially says it's 'old' blood', but also pink (less old) and quite a bit of fresh red spotting at various points. With ds (my first), we ended up in the EPU at 6 weeks, 7 weeks & 8 weeks ... at which point they told me not to come back in unless something impressive happened . I think the longest I went in that pg without a bleed was 3 weeks. Usually I bled about twice a week. Various things were diagnosed, then discounted - but tbh one mw told me that actuially they don't get to the bottom of most pg bleeds.

(I was also told when I had my scans that if they could detect a heartbeat early (it isn't always possible) - that's a good sign.)

Oh, and ds is fine - arrived 4 weeks early, but otherwise as normal as any other 3 1/2 yo...
So is dd - who arrived 2 days after her due date.

Someone told me that about 1/3 of pg women bleed at some point - most in the first trimester, so consider yourself in good company! Of course, some of those end badly, but by no means all of them.

Good luck with the rest of your pg - fingers crossed that this is a one off for you.

i had same description bleeding-type thing for the first four months. It was slightly concerning, but it stopped at about five months. So, try not to worry too much. It is very annoying though - as it's hard not to be concerned. If you are worried or it changes, chat to your Gp/midwife. x

this site gives the following odds

The rate of pregnancy loss with positive heartbeat varies with gestational age and the presence of vaginal bleeding:

-Heartbeat at < 6 week., With bleeding 33% are lost, 16% are lost if no bleeding present

-Heartbeat at 7-9 week., With bleeding 10% are lost, 5 % are lost without bleeding present

-Heartbeat at 9-11 week., With bleeding 4 % are lost, 1-2% are lost without bleeding present.

I had a similar experience to FPV with my first pregnancy - DD is now a bouncing 19month old.

Also had bleeding early on in this pregnancy & all is well so far (26wks) - m/w at EPU said it's obviously "normal" for me

try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know, having been there twice) - nothing you do or don't do will change anything & the odds are in your favour as they've found a HB.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Betsyboop, I saw the exact stats somewhere yesterday! Didnt really know where to put myself though as I wasnt under 6 weeks but was alomst 7 weeks!! Also The bleeding stopped after 2 days, and it was only on wiping, very minimal and light brown, almost like a coloured discharge, so can I really say that I had 'bleeding'?? LOL

Anyway, the 'discharge' has been gone for 2 days now and Im feeling very good and very pregnant!!

Thanks all xxxx

I had this and some fresh blood with both my babies. Both are fine.

beansprout · 21/07/2007 13:54

What you are describing doesn't constitute bleeding. It just sounds like some old blood working its way out. I had the same with ds and it was fine.

Glad you are feeling better!

I had 2 miscarriages before I became pregnant with DS. I had spotting at in the 1st trimester and I was sent for an early scan. I thought I was having another miscarriage so couldn't believe it when the sonographer said she could see a heartbeat. I was invited for weekly scans until I was 11 week pregnant, this helped to reassure me.

I had two bleeds, both lasting several days, at six and eight weeks. Both times found heartbeat (am currently 41 weeks and waiting) and was told bleeding not normal, but v common.

I did also get told after the second scan that once the foetus measures over 10mm head to rump, your chance of miscarriage drops to 2 per cent or something like that.

Hi. I am little worried and new to this forum. I was 6 week pregnant (through ivf) when i started bleeding suddenly at night time. i had a weird feel in my belly before the bleeding started. right side of my stomach was rock solid when i touched. When I checked my pantyliner was filled with blood, rushed to hospital. was going to toilet frequently. wasnt much on the pad but there was a lot of blood in the toilet. no pain or cloyts.
when doctor was going to check me i suddenly had a gush of blood which was everywhere on the floor, bed and my legs. doctor was quite concerned when she saw the bleeding and touched my stomach. she checked the cervix which was closed. continued bleeding whole night and next day till mid day. it started to turn brown then. i was thn sent home. had a scan next day and found sac and yolk sac but no fetal pole. i continued to have brown discharge/bleed. 4 days after i was scheduled for a scan with my private clinic. strong heartbeat was detected.
today i am 7.3 today. have been having brown bleed since and 2 episodes of fresh red bleed which was not heavy. one lasted whole night and the other which was yesterday again light and lasted 3 hour. i had very little brown discharge today. i am due for another scan on friday 31st. should i be worried after that bleed episode. Also in my scan sonographer told me that she can see the blood but good thing is that its not near the fetus.
I am really sorry for such a long post. looking for some answers if anyone had the same experience.
