Extra folic acid and vitamins

Can anyone help? I went to the doctors yesterday to kick start the pregnancy process. While I was there, it was suggested that because I have a BMI over 30, I need to take higher folic acid. I was taking pregnacare. Can I still take this or will it be too much folic acid?

Thanks!

Pretty sure your body will pee out any excess folic acid.

Hayls17 · 18/05/2019 20:56

I take higher dose folic acid for the same reason, and continue to take pregnacare too

Happycow · 18/05/2019 21:01

Im on higher dose too (5mg); midwife specifically told me its ok to carry on taking pregnacare etc too.

Pregnacare Max only has 50% of it’s folic as folic acid the rest is the active form as found in food. So it will be okay. Some women are often prescribed even more than 5mcg for various reasons (BMI being one of them) so for you I think it should be okay.

But folic acid on its own. Only take 1 dose of vitamins them take whatever extra folic acids

Folic avid you're excrete excess but you won't with some other vitamins which is why it's important to not over consume pregnacare

*buy, not but

Pregnacare Max is good for other reasons. They can support breastfeeding (especially the one with omega 6) and the calcium and extra folic you’ll get is very, very good if you are at increased risk for preclamsia (again can be BMI related). If you have pcos the inosutol in it is good for you too.

Talk to your GP / midwife about it before you come off because in many cases if you’re taking Pregnacare Max specifically they will request you to continue it with any additional vitamins they recommend. For example I will take extra vitamin D and extra iron on top of my pregnacare.

I’m only taking folic acid and vitamin D (which I take anyway due to a health condition, other meds I’m on for that and a vitamin D deficiency) and, after my booking in bloods, my midwife said there was no need for me to take additional vitamins as it seems I get sufficient from my diet.

I will be having some extra checks with my 28 week bloods on advice on the ANC (again due to a previously surgery) and May, or may not, be advised to start taking something then!!

WildFlower2019 · 19/05/2019 08:16

The midwife prescribed me the higher dose of folic acid and told me to stop taking my pregnacare. She said to get everything else through diet and to buy vitamin D and take that.

Whatever you do, don't buy multivitamin tablets as they have vitamin A in and you shouldn't get extra of that while pregnant

WildFlower2019 · 19/05/2019 08:18

And stopping pregnacare actually elevated a lot of my morning sickness and constipation, which was a brilliant side effect

Starlive23 · 19/05/2019 08:18

I too had a higher dose of folic acid for the first 12 weeks. Absolutely no problems here, as pp has suggested I think the excess is just flushed out.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I stopped the pregnacare after i was prescribed these.

Andrea91 · 19/05/2019 10:21

I take pregnancy vitamins that include folic acid. I was also prescribed extra folic acid. I have BMI over average.
