Where to put newborn during the day

Hey!
I'm looking at options for where to place baby during the day and could really use some advice

If I was to cover all bases it seems I need a Moses basket for sleep and some kind of rocker for awake time

Is there anything out there that does both? I don't mind buying what's needed but don't want too much unnecessary stuff either!

My other consideration is that we have a dog & most rockers are close to the ground which could be a pain keeping the dog away (although he's a very calm dog so I'm not even sure if this is a non issue)

The only item I have found that potentially does everything is the icandy michair with newborn pod. It seems the pod could be suitable for sleep and awake time but not 100% sure on this.

Thoughts would be gratefully received!!!

We had a Mamaroo that she loved for awake times and for sleep times, she was in the Uppababy Vista carrycot (it’s vented and certified for overnight sleeping so didn’t worry about long naps).
Good advice ^^ about waiting to see what sort of a baby yours will be and have some options lined up.

We have a dog too & have been using the sleepyhead on the kitchen bench for height as he doesn’t move etc yet :)

PetraRabbit · 17/05/2019 20:25

Maisey- the micandy rocker you suggested in your original post is lovely. Unfortunately my baby hated it and clocked up a total of 2 hours in it....ever! I would be very careful about spending money on a rocker without trialling it on your own baby. Was a pretty waste of time for us. Some babies just won't like any rockers, and others will love some and hate others.
I used a Sleepyhead around the house. Just perfect but probably not for you with dogs. We also had a snuzpod and the detachable cot part of that would be absolutely excellent to take around the house as it's fairly portable but also very sturdy and would keep the dogs out. It's also a brilliant crib for co-sleeping which I'd recommend to the moon and back.

It depends on whether it’s a first baby or not. First one needs all sorts of complicated equipment and a routine that is entirely baby centric.

If it’s the second or subsequent baby then it spends its day in car seats on nursery runs, in supermarket trolleys or in pushchairs at the park. Third onwards may find itself in laundry baskets, on the floor whilst the others are being bathed, lying outside on the grass or tucked up un a towel inside an inflatable boat.

Cherry....ha ha

Agree with this. My best friend has a Mamaroo for her baby and my DS hates it! Screams when he goes in it. He’s happy in a baby Bjorn bouncer though.

LuckyKitty13 · 17/05/2019 20:29

Agree a sling! For at last the first 3 months

Heyha · 17/05/2019 20:53

I'm hoping a combo of sling and carrycot on pram will do for us to start with (we also have a dog) but I keep getting my head turned by this sort of thing- silly purchase? It's the height that I like more than anything else

Our experience with newborns, mostly a sling, Moses basket when sleeping. Few month’s time, bouncer, baby gym.

Pebblesandblamblam · 17/05/2019 21:39

Which soft/ stretchy slings would you all recommend?

Fundays12 · 17/05/2019 21:46

I alwats used a carrycot on the pram so it’s easy to take baby out for walks etc and have a bouncer.

BertieBotts · 17/05/2019 21:49

We used the pram carrycot. You can also just move a moses basket from room to room - it's what they are meant for.

I think most bouncers today are too upright for a newborn. The Baby Björn one is nice and reclined and very like the ones you used to get in the 90s, which were the best, but the BB is overpriced. Have never had any kind of rocker personally. I don't know what the product is you mentioned but it sounds like an expensive unnecessary gadget :) in the UK only cots, cribs and moses baskets are approved for overnight sleep. A lot of these products aren't approved and fisher price have just got into a lot of trouble in the US over one of these which turned out to be dangerous.

And yes do expect to hold baby a lot. Partly because they like to be held and partly because it is so lovely to.

Of the stretchy wraps I've tried my favourite is the Boba wrap.

EyeDrops · 17/05/2019 22:37

We have a Hauck Sit n Relax - it's brilliant. Comfy seat for newborn but it's on a higher stand, so it's lovely for sitting round the table with baby at the same height. Converts to a high chair later. The newborn seat goes flat enough for naps - DD is 3 months and sleeps in there in the evening until we go to bed (then Moses basket).

I'm fortunate in having a baby who's happy to be put down though!

MummyBearBoo · 17/05/2019 22:48

The Snuzpod is great it attaches to the side of your bed like a Next to Me cot but it's wood instead of metal (I didn't like the metal frame on those) and you can remove the top part to take downstairs and the bottom is curved so it rocks we used this for our DD!

Pipandmum · 18/05/2019 09:09

My baby was too big to carry around (plus I had a c section) all the time and I don’t recall him being clingy. His bedroom was two flights up so we had a travel cot downstairs (no Moses basket) and a bouncy chair ( not a rocker). The travel cot was great when he got mobile and I needed to pop him somewhere safe if I needed loo/shower/ answer the door. I also had a combination car seat/push chair so if he fell asleep while in car or in pram I could just bring the car seat bit in and he could stay in that without waking him. Bumbo seat when he got a bit older.

SnuggyBuggy · 18/05/2019 09:13

Mine was a velcro baby so I'm glad I didn't spend any money on this sort of thing. I used a stretchy wrap.

Reastie · 18/05/2019 09:14

We have 2 Moses basket stands, one upstairs one downstairs then just move the basket wherever needed. Could also use buggy with pram top inside. We have a Tripp trap chair with newborn insert which means baby is table height and obv chair can then be used as they grow. Agree with carrier or sling too

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 18/05/2019 09:15

Do not put a bouncy chair or rocker or on a surface other than the floor!

We had a moses basket which came downstairs in the morning and dd slept in there or stayed in the pram after a walk as it seemed she would only sleep whilst moving! Hmm
Once a little older we had a cheap bouncer chair so she could see around and hold toys etc. It didn't rock itself, use WiFi and was the cheapest model but she was barely in it and it served its purpose.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 18/05/2019 09:17

Like this - it didn't need to be more technical or expensive than our car!!

reetgood · 18/05/2019 09:18

Stretchy wrap, Moses basket and me mostly. If you get a stretchy wrap, I found it helpful to go to a sling library/ watch videos to get the tie right. He hated it first time, then I went to the sling library and I got confident, we lived in it for first few months! He didn’t really like his bouncer but I was able to use to be able to get a shower (I dragged it in the shower with me). Likewise playmats and playpens. Complete non starter with us.

kgeal3 · 18/05/2019 11:21

I've bought a chair for this baby called swoon up baby bouncer by babymoov. I was lucky enough to get it really cheap and unused from a selling group but it looks idea for keeping baby off the ground away from dogs. It's around £80-100 new I think and can be used low like a usual bouncer chair or raised higher and can be folded when not in use. I also thought it would be good for taking to our caravan to use as a chair and a high chair in one x

kgeal3 · 18/05/2019 11:22

Just to add I will have a Moses basket too for sleeping in the day for the first few months

LuckyKitty13 · 18/05/2019 11:27

I agree that the sling library is the best place to choose a sling - you can try different ones and get one that fits your body as requirements. I bought one before baby was born , but it wasn't right for us when she arrived. We went to the sling library and for a different stretchy wrap which was excellent. Then when she was 6 weeks we went back and now using a woven wrap (cooker and can wrap around baby whilst holding her)

LuckyKitty13 · 18/05/2019 11:27

*as required

Triskaidekaphilia · 18/05/2019 11:38

My mum found a bouncer very cheap in a charity shop and I got a baby box for naps, if it's too big she can nap in the pram. If you do want something that does both I've seen some 3 in 1 rockee/napper/bouncer things, bit expensive but would save on space.
