Early scan has left me confused....I'm measuring too small

Wavedancer · 18/07/2007 14:54

I recently posted about my scan at 6 + 2 which showed me measuring for 5 weeks. I was told to go back a week later to check viability, since I was 100% sure of my ovulation date.

So yesterday I was re-scanned. The good news is that where before there was just a yolk sac, there is now a 5mm fetal pole and heartbeat.

The not-so-good news is that I am still measuring a week behind my dates (of 7+3) and a whole 11 days behind LMP dates and they've dated me 6 + 2, which means I would have tested positive 3 days after conception, in other words it's impossible. (I have a 31-day cycle and knew I ov'd on CD19). The consultant at the hospital seemed quite concerned about this and said miscarriage was still a 'higher than average' possibility for me - although he did say it could go either way and I may just have a slow developer (fingers crossed).

I really wanted this scan to show that my dates had 'caught up'. I know it is early days and there is a +/- 5 days margin of error, but I can't help but worry that I will lose this pregnancy just like the last one.

Has anyone else out there had early scans where you measured behind your dates, and if so, what happened?

Many thanks in advance.

i was made smaller by 11 days both times-they were right.2 happy big babies here.

Wishing you luck, and please dont worry

designerbaby · 18/07/2007 17:56

Hi Wave - sorry you're so worried...

FWIW I had a 12 week scan which put my dates a full 2 weeks behind what I'd thought, and what the first sonographer had told me only 3 days before. Which tells me that either a) my ovulation occurred at a different time to what I thought or b) the sonographers are fallible. I think possibly it's a combination of the two...

I'll probably never know... but she's around 27 weeks now and doing fine - big long legs and a fat tummy .

It's so early to tell... I guess you have to just take it a day at a time and believe your little one's a fighter.

12 week scan should tell you a lot more - but the waiting is incredibly hard - and must be doubly so if you've already had a m/c.

Thinking of you - let us know how you get on...

try not to worry (easier said than done I know - I had 3 early scans with DD at 6, 7 & 8 wks & they thought I would probably miscarry until the last one as the embryo wasn't developing "normally" - DD is now a bouncing 19month old )

Early scans aren't totally accurate & they fact that you have a heartbeat already is a VERY good sign & your miscarriage risk has already dropped to less than 5%.

Taichimum · 19/07/2007 15:20

Hi wavedancer. We were posting each other on this subject a few weeks ago. Mine has caught up a bit on 8 week scan from being two weeks behind at 6 week scan. Was about 2 days behind at 8 weeks and having another scan tomorrow at 10 weeks.
As far as yours goes, it is entirely possible that it is a slowly developing but soon to be perfectly formed foetus. Mine has made up nearly two weeks in the space of two weeks so anything is possible. The fact that there is a heart beating is a really good sign.
I really hope it is good news for you. Are your having another scan before nuchal?

Wavedancer · 19/07/2007 16:50

Thanks for all the replies, that does give me some reassurance.

Taichimum - best of luck for tomorrow's scan, do let us know how you get on. No, I am not scheduled for another scan until 12 weeks now, although I am thinking of paying for a private one, as I just can't stop worrying that this pregnancy is going the same way of the last one (which is odd for me as I am usually such an optimist!). Unfortunately last time there had been a heartbeat for a brief period of time so even though the statistics are in my favour, experience has clouded my judgement.

Just to update you all....

I ended up having a 9-week scan yesterday (due to paranoia) and unfortunately it showed that the baby's heartbeat had stopped around 5 days ago, with the fetus measuring 7.5 weeks.

This is my second 'missed miscarriage' and I am devastated.

Thanks for all the messages of support, but sadly it was not meant to be again for me.

Wavedancer, I'm so sorry. Have had exactly the same thing happen to me - scan last week showed baby smaller than dates but with a heartbeat, scan this morning showed it had made good growth but no heartbeat any more. It seems so cruel, doesn't it, when everyone says that seeing a heartbeat means it's almost certain to be OK. Thinking of you....

My dates have been moved 3 times, started off as the 9th Aug and is now 1st Aug. Try not to worry too much, I know thats easier said than done. My local hospital won't scan now until 8 weeks as they say its just accurate enough before then and can cause too much stress.

mum2george · 31/07/2007 12:26

Rachel & Wavedancer, so sorry to hear your news. Will be thinking of you both.

Uki · 31/07/2007 13:20

Hi wavedancer and rachel

So sorry to read both your news, it's really not fair, hope you have some lovely family and friends around to look after you.

if you are up to a little advice from someone read on....
I also had two mm/c in a row. I asked for blood tests and found mild blood clotting, got pg with ds before conclusion on tests and went well, but then had another mm/c I'm now on 5th pg and on asprin, and really wish i knew about it after first mm/c. Look into when you feel up to it, or i can post some links.

sorry for your losses and take care.

Taichimum · 31/07/2007 13:57

So sorry to hear both your news. Perhaps you could ask your doctor for same tests uki had.

Wavedancer · 01/08/2007 15:16

Well I had the ERPC this morning and all went as well as could be expected.

Uki - thanks so much for sharing your story, it does give me hope and I'm delighted this pregnancy is working out for you.

I have had the tissue sent off for analysis, so hopefully that will give me some answers. My consultant did mention a possible clotting disorder, so we shall see....

Rachel - I'm so sorry you've been through this as well. I hope you are OK?

Rachel1963 · 01/08/2007 16:45

Hi Wavedancer, I'm up and down but better today than yesterday. Still nothing happening so I think I'll be having an ERPC as well though I don't know when - am going back to the clinic on Tues and I don't know how quickly they'll get me in for the op. I think once that's done, then I'll be able to think about moving forward. And as it's my 3rd mc, I'll be referred to the recurrent mc clinic which may have some answers or suggestions, can only hope so.

pipsqueeke · 01/08/2007 16:53

(((hugs))) wave also rach.

I also went to the epu yesterday and found the baby to be smaller (by about a week) than my rough dates. the baby had died about a week ago. in some respects i'm thankful everyhting seems to be happening naturally so at least i'm in the privacy of my own home iycwim.

hope you're resting as much as you can. be good to yourself. like rach i'm also doing better today than yesterday, but one day at a time I think - well at the minute it's 1 hour at a time as i'm up and down like a yoyo at the mo.

dal21 · 01/08/2007 17:09

early scans are not the most reliable for dating - they are viability scans to look for heartbeats/ rule out etopics etc.
The most accurate dating scan is around the 12 week mark - so really wouldnt worry about it! The most important and exciting part is the heartbeat - you have that! The chances of losing the baby once the heartbeat has been seen is much lower, so please dont worry!

Wavedancer · 01/08/2007 20:27

Rachel - I know what you mean, it's a case of alternating up and down throughout the day for me too. I do feel some sense of 'moving on' now that I've had the ERPC though and having done it 'au naturel' last time, I can definitely say this is the better way.

I was very, very lucky in that I get BUPA through work so was able to get my op scheduled immediately and I was cared for very well. I also found my NHS EPU were able to fit me in very quickly as well though, so you should find they'll be able to get you in within 48 hours. I hope it goes as well as it possibly can for you. xx

Pip - I'm so sorry that you are going through this as well; I hope things move along quickly and as painlessly as possible for you. xx

Yep i had a scan at 10 weeks which was a whole 2 weeks behind i was absolutly positive of my dates, i had been trying v hard to get pregnant and knew the day i conceived. they gave me a diffrent date to which i worked out was 9 days over due and now 2 years on have a perfect daughter born at ahealthy near 8lb weight so try not to worry. my friend is experiencing the same thing she is 10 days behind what she thought she was and was so shocked, but she has 8 weeks to go now and all seems fine

angie0201 · 01/08/2007 20:53

BetsyBoop · 01/08/2007 21:10

dal21 · 01/08/2007 22:37

Oh I am so sorry too! I only read OP and posted. Only just read the whole thread. Rachel and wavedancer - I am so very sorry.

StarSams · 13/06/2019 14:14

Hey! I know I'm like 12 years late on this post! Don't know if you'll reply back by now.. but firstly I just want to say - I am so sorry for what you've been through (and Rachel)

Plumsandpeaches · 16/10/2019 14:48

Dear StarSams,

thanks for sharing. I am currently going through the same thing.

I had a scan (at around 9-10 weeks) and my scan is showing up like I am at 5 weeks. The baby is too small. I have another scan and a week and a few days to find out if the baby grows or whether it has stopped growing.

I can not be sure about the dates of conception or of my last period so I may have my dates wrong, but I am preparing for the worst but hoping for the best (if that make sense).

I keep wiping blood, its quite faint, with a clot or two, so I am really worried.

Has any one got any advice? I am so worried!

Ellieboo556677 · 19/10/2019 15:30

Hi Plumsandpeaches,

I am going through the same thing. Went for my early scan and thought I was about 9 weeks but showing 6.5 weeks but no heartbeat.
Been told to go back in 10 days for a rescan to see if pregnancy has progressed.
Did you have a heartbeat? Are you still bleeding? I just don’t know what to expect and can’t work out why I am showing so much earlier than I thought?! I’m so nervous. Just don’t know what to expect :(

Anyone had anything similar? Any advice?

Plumsandpeaches · 06/11/2019 22:37

Dear @Ellieboo556677

I am sorry to hear you are going through the sam ordeal as me. I did not have a heartbeat and the baby was barely a 2mm big. It was in its early stages whereby it would not have been bigger than a grain of rice.

My bleeding did become heavier, and the cramps became worse and unfortunately for me I ended up having a miscarriage.

I have slowly come to terms with this now, but I do have good and bad days. I hope you have better news than I did. I know this sounds so Cliche, but try not to worry. What isn't good for you, will not be good for the baby. I know that is the last thing you want to hear right now. I really hope everything goes well with you.

Thoughts are with you xx
