Worried about unwashed veg

I hope I’m worrying unnecessarily because I’m pregnant, I cooked some new potatoes for tea tonight. I did wash them and gave a little scrub off but there were still patches on them. This is normal right? I’m worried I’ve been silly with the toxoplasmosis risk now. The potatoes were boiled. Am I over worrying?

Yes you’re over worrying
Washing potatoes and then boiling would kill bacteria etc
Potato skin is patchy

Yes. You are over worrying. You cooked them - I assume in boiling water. That would kill off all the nasties.

BoomZahramay · 06/05/2019 21:37

Yes, an overreaction. Don't worry anymore.

Thank you all :)

I never wash fruit or veg. I also have two healthy children. Nothing bad has happened to me from eating unwashed veg.

The OP has nothing to worry about as she washed and booked her potatoes, they're fine!

And you could go your whole life probably not washing vedge and be fine.

However @Invisimamma it isn't something I'd advocate! There was a good bout (and some might have been fatal i can't remember) of food poisoning in Spain a while ago due to lettuce. In fact a lot of food poisoning can come from unwashed vegetables not just meat or the other common causes.

But as long as you wash it like the OP has it should all be fine. I always give my vegetables a good rinse and make sure any obvious dirt comes off. Especially salads and things which aren't cooked.

I'm not saying you have to sit there worrying over every carrot, potato and broccoli, cos they will likely be fine if you don't. But never bad to give them a bit of a clean.

If you bought them from a supermarket rater than digging them out of your garden they will have been washed already before being packed into bags.

And yes, potatoes are patchy plus you boiled them-you're fine.
