Private early scans

Hi everyone. I am 4+1 weeks pregnant (every day counts 😭) and I have my first midwife appointment on the 23rd May, I'll be just short of 8 weeks then. As I know 99% of you ladies are too, I just so nervous about everything being ok. I have a 9 year old and everything went fine with that pregnancy. After both getting to where we want to be career wise we started TTC at the end of last year and conceived straight away. I was so naive and never even thought about miscarriage but unfortunately we had one in January. Now I'm trying my best not to get too excited, stressed or worried but I know waiting to see the midwife before they even consider giving me an early scan it's going to play havoc with my nerves. My question is who has paid for an early scan privately, what week did you do it and could you see much? Were you reassured?
Also.. I am 4+1 now but that is going by my last period, so really I'm only 2 weeks pregnant. Do I count those two weeks when booking in for an early scan? Thanks for any help x

We had a private scan :) its from the date of your last period. I hope that helps

Teddybear45 · 29/04/2019 18:05

You need to wait until 6 weeks since your last period to have hope of seeing anything. 7 ideally.

RedPandaFluff · 29/04/2019 18:15

Agree with @Teddybear45 - there's really not much point in going for a scan before 6 weeks as if they don't see a heartbeat (which will freak you out but is entirely possible) they'll ask you to come back again in a week.

I feel your pain - I'm 5+2 after 4 cycles of IVF so I understand the desperation of wanting to know everything is okay; even so, the earliest my clinic will scan me is 6+4.

Book a scan for a couple of weeks time, and fill the time with distractions! Good luck 💐

Thanks ladies💜 Maybe I'll try book in for when I'm 7 weeks, just before I see the midwife? I'm hoping at 7 weeks we will be able to see at least a heartbeat. Only 20 days to go 😳 going to need to find a good series on Netflix to binge on after work to keep me occupied 🤣

7 weeks is perfect. Should be able to see a heartbeat, and then it’s not too long a wait to the dating scan.

JE87 · 29/04/2019 19:49

I paid for one at 8 weeks and so glad I did, it was very reassuring! You may want to consider going too early though as they can't always detect the heartbeat too early on. Good luck!

LizzieZara · 29/04/2019 19:57

JE18, I definitely wont go before 7 weeks. Out of interest, how was your 8 week scan? Did you see much? Did you get a heartbeat?

My mw told me not recommended before 6.5w as can't often see foetal pole. 7.5w+ is ideal. If you are having no problematic symptoms, try to last as long as you can before going. I just had one at 8w via nhs. Consultant was very clear that lots can happen up to 14w and to be cautious. Good luck !

I paid for a private scan when I was 9+5 weeks. Definitely recommend it ☺️

jcq17 · 30/04/2019 07:06

I had a private scan at 9+2 and it was reassuring.

cravingmilkshake · 30/04/2019 07:10

Here's mine at 8 weeks on the dot. Very reassuring but I also found private scans addictive. I had one at 11 weeks because I was petrified of going to the nhs scan and they would tell me something is wrong!

It happened to my friend, she had a private scan at 9 weeks and went to the nhs scan and had to sit with all pregnant mums and they told her her baby died at 9 weeks and 4 days so I was very anxious!! Now we've just had our 4d one and she is due in July!

Sorry- don't mean to manic you but it got costly for us because I was so anxious!

Yes we had one and it was reassuring at first and now I'm waiting for my NHS one and feeling as anxious as anyone, literally feel sick with nerves! But it was awesome to see baby and hear heart beat so early x

Rememberallball · 30/04/2019 13:01

I had a viability scan at 6+6 due to it being an ivf pregnancy. I had been warned to expect a multiple pregnancy as had very high beta hCG readings for time post embryo transfer - and that was confirmed. This is the picture of my scan from that day - we also heard both heartbeats so found that reassuring too.

Aww so lovely to see your photos! Thank you. I think we have agreed to book in for a private scan at 7+1. They cost £55.. I think I'll probably have a few and just forego a meal or two out.
