Foetal medicine scan - baby's heart, scared

Hello everyone,

I've come on here because I'm very worried about a Foetal medicine scan I've asked to attend this Thursday. We went to our 20 week scan last Friday, and while everything else looked great, they saw some fluid around the heart and a 'mild right sided hypertrophy' which I think means it looks slightly enlarged. They've been very lovely about it all, but haven't explained any of the possible outcomes.

Has anyone else had anything similar? Will they be looking for heart defects, chromosome abnormalities? Will it definitely come to something, or might it be okay?

Thank you :) x

By itself it can be okay (I’m Indian and as Thalessemia trait can run in families right sided hypertropy is a fairly common finding) they probably want to make sure the rest of the heart and organs look okay.

They will almost certainly look at everything, just to be thorough. I understand how worrying it is- I went through something similar recently. There may be relevant Facebook groups- I joined one for my baby’s findings and found it to be incredibly helpful.

Hi, mine was for a specific problem with the brain, so wouldn’t be helpful to you, but if you search the groups, I bet you’ll find one or more that’s relevant to you. I can’t emphasise enough how helpful I found my group.
